Last year in my post 4 Ways to Dye Beautiful Easter Eggs without a Kit, one of the ways I highlighted was to make marbled Easter eggs. Well, we were intrigued enough with the look of those eggs, we decided to try it ourselves. Here is how we did it and our thoughts about this project.
Supplies
- 1 dozen white eggs
- liquid food coloring (we had trouble finding this-Target carries it)
- white vinegar
- 12 snack sized zip top bags (one for each egg)
- Water
Directions
Hard Boil the Eggs
- Place the eggs in a large saucepan
- Cover with cool water-by 1 inch
- Slowly bring water to a boil over medium heat
- When the water reaches a full boil cover and remove from heat. Let sit for 12 minutes.
- Pour eggs into a colander and run under cool water until the eggs are cool to the touch.
- Allow eggs to cool and dry an additional 30 minutes.
Coloring the Eggs
- Roll the eggs on the table to gently crack them. Be careful-you need the shell to stay intact but you need the cracks to create the colored lines on the eggs.
- Place 1 egg in a ziptop bag, add about 8 drops of the desired food coloring (or mix 2 colors to get more color choices).
- Zip the bag closed and gently massage the color into the egg until it is completely covered.
- Leave the egg in the bag for 30 minutes to allow dye to set.
- Repeat the process with the rest of the eggs.
- After the 30 minutes is up for the first 4 eggs place those eggs in a colander.
- Rinse the eggs with cool water to wash off any excess dye.
- Next pour a bit of vinegar over each egg to set the dye.
- Repeat this rinsing process with the rest of the eggs.
- Dry all of the eggs with paper towels.
Peeling the Eggs
- Crack the shells and peel the eggs. This will reveal the beautiful net-like pattern.
Mom Maven’s Thoughts
We had a lot of fun making these eggs. We did have a lot of trouble peeling the eggs. The 7yo didn’t have the patience to help peel the eggs and after a while neither did the adults. We pushed through and completed the task but it took us a very long time to carefully peel the eggs. Maybe we did something wrong when we cooked them, I don’t know but peeling was tedious and time-consuming. We chose to make deviled eggs for our family Easter celebration with the marbled Easter eggs. Some of our family thought the eggs looked too strange to eat but I sure liked them!

These are great! My kids would love making these and mixing colors to create their own! I have trouble peeling eggs once they have cooled down as well. The only way I can peel them is right off the stove and run cold water on them to where they can be handled. Thanks for sharing how to make these!

Awesome looking eggs. I will have to try this at easter time. The kiddo thinks he is to old to dye eggs but that is one of the things I do every year, even before he was born.

These are really neat! I doubt I would make them at our house. We don’t eat too many eggs. But, they sure are neat to look at.
Well, we’ve had a fair amount of eggs come out this way at our house unintentionally. Toddlers prefer marbled eggs, lol…

Even with an older child, we are constantly finding new ways to outdo each other over last year’s eggs. Beloved is going to love these. It’s so neat and I never thought of actually cracking them first so that the interior gets colored.

I’ve heard that the fresher the egg, the harder to peel, because the egg loses a little volume as it ages. Fresh eggs press right up against the shell so they’re harder to peel. Or so I’ve heard! Anyway, something to keep in mind that might make the project easier!

This does look fun! But, no, I don’t think we’ll be making marbled eggs this Easter. My sons are all too old to make holiday crafts or just don’t want to do that anymore. My youngest son is more interested in making art and metal jewelry. Ah, they do grow up fast. Enjoy the craft making together while you still can.

I have a hard time peeling eggs as it is. I am not sure that this experiment would be very successful for me because I do not have much patience. haha. Your pictures are great and even though you struggled, it looks like it was successful for you. They do look really cool! I am just not sure the time is worth the outcome. My question to you is, would you try it again?

Joyce, I would do it again but next time I would use store-bought eggs. These eggs were fresh from my neighbors chickens. I have learned that fresh eggs are harder to peel.

What a fun way to decorate your eggs. We came up with all sorts of natural dyes last year and I’m going to use this technique with those colors and see how they turn out!

I love Easter eggs! I have seen accidental marbled eggs in the past, but what a great idea to marble on purpose. Too bad the eggs were difficult to peel (I can relate), but the deviled eggs look delicious!

Howard from what I have learned the eggs may have been difficult to peel because they were fresh from the chickens across the street. I guess the fresher the egg the harder it is to peel.

My granddaughter is old enough to color eggs this year. I can’t wait to try this method. BTY, if you run cold water over the cracked egg, being sure to get the water under the membrane, the shell will come off easily, usually in one large piece.

Those look amazing! I have found that eggs are easiest to peel if they’ve been given an ice-water bath after hard boiling. I dump out the hot water after cooking, and replace it with cold water and tons of ice. I let them sit for about 40 minutes. I also add baking soda to the water when boiling. The peels come off easily.

My youngest (a senior) and I have decided to make these eggs as one of our last together as a family with her older brother and sister! I love these!! It will be bittersweet as egg decorating has been a staple in our family and who knows, as an emptynester, I may still make them for other kids! Thanks for the idea!!
