This trifle ended up posing a bit of a difficulty. I wanted the cake layers to be actual round cake layers but sliced in half so they were thinner than a normal cake layer. I know I only own one 9″ round cake pan and on this particular day, that cake pan, which hasn’t been used in a while, was no where to be found. All 3 of us tore the kitchen and dining room apart looking for it. We couldn’t find it so, I had to do it the hard way. I baked a 13×9″ rectangular cake. I found a bowl that was the correct size circumference for the bottom on my trifle dish and used it as a template to cute a round cake out of my rectangular cake! Then I used my bread knife to cut the round cake in half so that I had 2 thin layers. Phew! It worked!
- 1 box Chocolate Cake mix and ingredients needed as listed on box
- 1 jar Smuckers Hot Fudge Sauce
- 1 large tub Cool Whip regular, light or extra creamy
- 1 pkg Chocolate Covered Heath Bar Bits near the chocolate chips
- Bake the cake in 9" round cake pans. Follow the directions on the box, including cooling directions.
- Once the cake is totally cooled, use a bread knife to slice the cake layer into two thin cake layers.
- Place one of the thin layers in the bottom of your trifle dish.
- Following the directions on the jar, heat up the hot fudge sauce.
- Pour a thin layer of hot fudge over the cake layer, using the back of a spoon, work the fudge to the edge of the cake.
- Allow the hot fudge to cool before moving on.
- Add a thick layer of Cool Whip, spreading it all the way to the edges.
- Pour a single layer of the Heath Bar Bits on top of the Cool Whip.
- Repeat the layers again: thin layer of cake, hot fudge, Cool Whip, Heath Bar Bits.
- If there is room in your trifle bowl repeat the layers again.
- If not, take some of the remaining cake in your hands and crumble it over the top of the trifle until it is covered.
- Then sprinkle on some of the remaining Heath Bar Bits.
- Use a large spoon to serve the trifle.
This Chocolate Toffee Trifle was the hit of the potluck! Our worship leader tried to steal and and run out the door with it so no one else could eat it!

This is best of both worlds. Chocolate and Toffee. Yummy! My husband loves heath bars and would flip for this.
