It’s November and that means Thanksgiving is coming up quickly. That being said, I haven’t cooked a whole turkey since the summer of 1982 when I was a cook at a summer camp and I cooked turkeys for 100 campers every other Friday night. Those were basic turkeys and I had to follow the camp recipe so…I consider myself a turkey novice to this day. This is why I researched 10 Ways to Cook a Turkey and thought I’d share those findings with you.

The first 15 years of my life Thanksgiving was hosted by my Auntie Evie and she did the turkey. The next 40+ years my mom cooked the turkey, except for 2. Thanksgiving 2015 was 1 week after my dad passed away and we ordered a premade turkey meal from Publix, it was ok. Thanksgiving 2020 was the first Thanksgiving after my mom passed. My sister ordered a turkey from the Honey Baked Ham company but we made all the sides. It was better than 2015 but still not right.

This year my sister’s family is traveling to my niece’s boyfriends family across the state. Aaron and his family are making their annual trek to Tennessee, and Jordan and Savannah are hosting Thanksgiving on Saturday. My problem is I love turkey and I love Thanksgiving. It may just be Ron and I together on Thursday, so far the friends I’ve reached out to all have big family plans, but I want at least a mini Thanksgiving dinner then too. We talked about just doing a turkey breast but, I’m thinking maybe cooking a small turkey so that is what led me to search my friend’s blogs for turkey recipes.

Whether you’re looking for a new way to cook your turkey or maybe you’ve never cooked one before, I hope you find a new idea or two below.

One of my clearest childhood holiday memories is of Nana Foster making bread pudding and sauce to go along with all of the pies Auntie Evie made. I didn’t like bread pudding because it had raisins in it but I loved her sauce! I would always get to lick the bowl and the delicious sweetness always made me feel so happy. As an adult I have learned that bread pudding doesn’t have to have raisins in it (yay!). When I served my Eggnog Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce to my mom on Thanksgiving, I was sharing this memory and she informed me that she was pretty sure Nana’s sauce was just confectioner’s sugar icing and not vanilla sauce oh well, no wonder it was so sweet!

This recipe is based off an old recipe off an eggnog container. I switched it up a bit, notice, no raisins, and added the vanilla sauce instead of whipped cream. I hope you enjoy it.

Yes, I may be biased but I believe my mom’s stuffing recipe is the best simple turkey stuffing recipe ever. The thing I look forward to most on Thanksgiving and Christmas is my mom’s stuffing. It is my favorite part of our holiday meals. She only makes it twice a year, and last year she only made it once. Last year, 9 days before Thanksgiving my dad passed away after a short illness. His celebration of life service was 6 days before Thanksgiving. In an effort to make holiday prep easier on all of us, my sister got a Thanksgiving meal from Publix. It was good and filled the need we had at the time, but, we all missed Mimi’s stuffing!

As Christmas approached we decided to make Christmas dinner as we always had, from scratch with everyone contributing. The passing of my dad also meant that this would probably be the last holiday we celebrated in the house that had been our family home since we moved to Florida in 1980. It also meant it could be the last turkey my mom cooked since the plan was to move her into senior living. I knew that my younger sister would never cook a whole turkey, she won’t cook meat with bones in it, so I better learn how to make Mimi’s stuffing. I went to her home 2 days before Christmas to learn her secrets.

Mimi’s recipe is based on the Bread Stuffing recipe found in her 1960s era Better Homes & Garden Cookbook. This recipe does not appear in the 1989 version that I own. Of course, over the years Mimi has tweaked this recipe to make it her own. In my opinion one of the most important ingredients is the Bell’s Seasoning. It can be difficult to find in some areas but thankfully it is available on Amazon!

Some people call it stuffing if it is in the bird and dressing if it is out of the bird. In the south it is always called stuffing. We are in Florida which isn’t the south…even though we are. We just call it stuffing. What do you call it?

Happy Thanksgiving to all of my US readers. Today I am celebrating YOU! Why am I thankful for you? Today is my 5 year Blogiversary for The Mom Maven. I started blogging on a Homeschool blog in June of 2008 but I began TheMomMaven.com on November 28, 2009. Over the last 5 years I have written 1,778 posts and received 17,874 comments.

I couldn’t do what I do without you, my loyal readers. I am thankful for you every day, though I seldom tell you. Since my Blogiversary fell on a major holiday I didn’t plan a big blow out or giveaway. What I would love is if on this special day you would share my blog with your friends and family. Tweet a link to your favorite post, Share a current giveaway on Facebook, Pin a favorite recipe on Pinterest…whatever works for you.

Thank you!

My 2012 Holiday Guide is well underway! For the next 4 weeks I’ll continue to share easy recipes, gift ideas and giveaways to help you make this holiday season one to remember. To give you even more great resources I am taking part in the Holiday Hop of Goodies!

This party is a blog hop hosted by Susie QT Pies Scraps of Life I am participating which means you will find other bloggers hosting this same hop. When you add your own goodies in the below linky it will show up on their linky, too! If you have a blog, feel free to grab the code at the bottom of the linky and add it to your own holiday post! The more the merrier! Link up anything holiday related! We want you to share your recipes, gift ideas, giveaways, holiday deals and more! Inappropriate links will be deleted.
For our family Thanksgiving meal at my mom’s house I am bringing a Root Beer Float Cake. I made this a few weeks ago for our harvest meal at church and it was a huge hit! My sister saw my picture on Facebook and asked me to bring it for Thanksgiving, so I am. My friend, Kim saw my Pinterest Pin of this recipe on Facebook and she made it for her family too. They loved it so much it became the “recipe of the day” on TheJoyFM Morning Cruise, where her husband and my son work!

This past Sunday our small group had Thanksgiving dinner together. I was in charge of dessert. I headed straight to my Tasty Treats Pinterest board to find a recipe to try. I decided to make Cinnamon Roll Dutch Apple Pie which I had pinned from Pillsbury.com. I LOVE Dutch Apple Pie and using Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls for the crust sounded heavenly! This pie was so delicious and it is one of my easy recipes. I wanted to make sure you had the recipe in case you wanted to add it to your Thanksgiving dinner menu.

Directions

Heat oven to 375 degrees

In a medium bowl mix the crumb topping ingredients together until small clumps form: 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup softened butter. Refrigerate.

Spoon icing from can of rolls into small microwavable bowl; cover and refrigerate.

Lightly flour rolling pin and work surface or cutting board. Separate dough into 8 rolls. With rolling pin, roll each cinnamon roll, cinnamon side up, into 4- to 5-inch round.

In ungreased 9-inch glass pie plate, place 1 dough round in center. Arrange remaining 7 dough rounds around center round and up side of plate, overlapping slightly as necessary. With fingers, press dough to seal together in bottom and up side of pie plate to form crust. Flute edge.

In large bowl, gently mix filling ingredients: 4-6 Granny Smith Apples thinly sliced, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 2 TBS all-purpose flour, 1 1/4 tsp apple pie spice and 2 TBS lemon juice.

Spoon filling into cinnamon roll-lined pie plate.

Sprinkle crumb topping over top to completely cover filling.

Bake about 1 hour or until top is golden brown and apples are tender. Cool on cooling rack at least 1 hour.

Before serving, microwave icing on High 10 to 15 seconds or until runny enough to drizzle. Drizzle back and forth over top of pie.
