Since we have been longtime fans, we were familiar with the big picture of the Smallbone’s story. In UNSUNG HERO, we learned a lot more about the struggles this family faced, why they left Australia, how hard life in America was when they arrived in Nashville, and how they persevered and clung to God through it all.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

We both enjoyed the movie very much. It feels honest. You get invested in the well-developed characters. The story of a tightknit family going through hard times yet staying together while relying on God and the church community that surrounds them is an important message in this day of disposable marriages.

I have seen every movie that Joel Smallbone has been in and this is his best acting ever. It’s got to be hard to play your own father. When you take on a character, you learn things about that person, real or fictional. As an actor it can be very difficult to play some you know so well because you might learn things about them you later wished you’d never known.

This movie is not about For King + Country the band, it is the story of the Smallbone family and the beginnings of their sister, Rebecca St James’ award-winning music career.

The movie is rated PG and I don’t think kids under the age of 12 would be very interested but you mom and dad should get your tickets now! The movie hits theaters April 26!!!

I want to start off with a word of caution, unlike most Pure Flix films, I don’t feel God’s Country Song is appropriate for kids under the age of 13. There is significant alcohol use/abuse, and some violence. Use your own discretion.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

This is a very well done movie. While not what I consider to be typical Pure Flix fare, we really enjoyed it. Yes, the subject matter is difficult, a but gritty but it’s an honest look at a life that tries to hide it’s hurts with alcohol. Justin Gaston’s portrayal of Noah Bryan is spot on. He is a singer/songwriter as well as an actor so all the scenes performing his music on stage were authentic and it showed.

This film is about faith, fatherhood, and forgiveness. Noah has always resented his father for not supporting his dreams of fame and fortune. Always feeling that you don’t have the love and support of your family as you chase your dreams is a heavy weight to carry. Of course, there are always two sides to every story and as Noah learns why his father feels this way, thanks to mom sharing dad’s big secret, Noah begins to understand his father’s side.

I hope you’ll watch God’s Country Song when it starts streaming on Pure Flix starting June 16th.

Who am I to tell you what your kids need as far as a Bible goes? I have served in Kid’s Ministry for 42 years and counting, I have a degree in education, completed Bible college, and homeschooled my kids birth through high school-just to name a few accomplishments. The other night Ron and I watched Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters on Pure Flix. The movie was very well written and well acted with a great cast that includes two husband-wife duos playing married couples! Bart Johnson (High School Musical) and Robin Lively (Teen Witch) along with David Barrera (NYPD: Blue) and Maria Canals-Barrera (Wizards of Waverly Place) play the two sets of parents in the movie.

I was so excited when I heard Affirm was making a streaming series about a morning show on a Christian radio station. You see, I worked on air at what was then a local Christian radio station from 1991-1995. I still work seasonally off air in phone central for all of the fundraising drives for the stations in our network. My oldest son has worked at Radio Training Network/The Joy FM for several years as IT Director and Project Manager so Christian radio is a passion in our family. While Live+Local is not like any morning show I’ve ever heard, it make a fun TV show. Dave Coulier is great, he plays a great curmudgeon. We all experience change and transitions in our lives and that is what the cast is dealing with in episode 1. Tommy is set in his ways and has a “if it’s not broke, why fix it’ attitude and isn’t interested in any input from the new Programing Director. Tina wants to grow and improve as a host and not always play second fiddle to Tommy. Lucy has just been promoted to producer, which is intimidating and she is trying to find her place on the team. Jerry is the new guy, the Programing Director, the boss who wants to shake things up a bit.

I think it will be fun to go on this journey with these characters and see how they change and grow as the show continues. Episodes 1 and 2 are now available with additional episodes releasing weekly. Join Pure Flix now so you can watch Live+Local with your family.

My husband and I watched FINDING LOVE IN MOUNTAIN VIEW the other night (we always watch Hallmark movies together, I’m that blessed). Overall we enjoyed the movie. Yes, it’s a Hallmark movie so it has beautiful scenery, a rather predictable script, and a happy ending. That’s why we watch Hallmark movies, right?

The main cast of Danielle C. Ryan as Margaret, Myko Olivier as Andrew, Skyler Elyse Philpot as Sammie, and Luke Loveless as Joel all do a great job of making their characters believable. They draw you in, especially the children.

Unfortunately, the opening scene really concerned us. The acting was so bad we were afraid we were in for a long night. The actress playing Margaret’s assistant was not good at all. Thankfully she was only in a few scenes. I promise if you stick it out a few minutes, the rest of the movie is well done.

As KidMin leaders we know we are not a child’s number one source of spiritual leadership-that comes from the parents who spend much more time with their children than we do. We KidMin leaders get to spend and average of 2 hours a month with the kids we minister to. I hate to think about the kids who have no positive spiritual leadership in their homes. Our time with the kids who come to our churches is so limited we need to make sure that we are using our time wisely. RESILIENT helps us focus on what’s most important.

I feel at our church we are pretty much already aligned with the Belong-Believe-Become philosophy of RESILIENT with our Reach-Learn-Connect philosophy. Different words meaning about the same things. Kids need to know they are loved and cared for by adults at church. They need to learn the Word of God and know that it is inerrant. Lastly they need to out their faith into action by living a God-honoring life.

If you are a parent or a KidMin or Student Ministries leader, I highly recommend you read RESILIENT. It will help you make sure your ministry priorities are in order so that you can reach your kids for Christ.

You know my reviews are always honest and there is one negative to this book. There are some glaring grammatical and punctuation errors that were not caught during the editing process. There were a few times I wanted to put the book down and give up on it. I know we all make mistakes, I’ve made my share on this blog. I just feel a real book, which you assume would be professionally edited before going to print, should not have multiple errors.

The premise of The 5 Love Languages is that there are 5 basic ways we feel loved. Physical Touch, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Words of Affirmation, and Quality Time. We all have a primary love language and many of us have a strong secondary love language, or way we feel loved.

Naturally we usually give love the way we like to receive it. Unfortunately, the person we are giving love to, our spouse, child, friend etc. probably speaks a different love language so they don’t receive love the way we easily give it. Oh no! What can we do to learn to speak their language? We can read the books and/or we can download the Love Nudge App to help us.

On the Love Nudge App you can take the 5 Love Languages Assessment and reveal your love language. You can also send the app to your spouse and have them take the assessment. Then the real journey begins as you learn to speak each other’s love language. Take Ron and I for example; my primary love language is Words Of Affirmation and my secondary is Physical Touch. Ron’s primary is Acts of Service and secondary is Quality Time. Ron has a 0% need for Physical Touch…can you see how that is a problem? We realized when we downloaded the Love Nudge App and took our assessments that my need for physical touch had been mostly been met by our son, Jordan, whose primary love language is physical touch. He is a hugger and toucher who, got married in September and now doesn’t live in my house and isn’t around for daily hugs!

Ron and I have been using the Love Nudge App for a few weeks now and honestly, it started out as a bone of contention between us for the first week. Ron saw his lack of speaking my love languages as a failure as a husband and he didn’t want an app, or me, telling me he needed to change. I saw this all as a challenge and one I have failed in the last two weeks. The first week I was barely home in the evenings because I was working on a huge project at church. It is hard to do Acts of Service and/or Quality Time when you aren’t around. The second week I was so busy catching up from the first week I did get a few Acts of Service accomplished and as far as I know, they went unnoticed As a Words of Affirmation girl I need to hear, “Thanks for doing…” We are very much still learning how to speak each other’s languages and we are committed to this so that our marriage will be even better!

About The Cheesecake Bible Second Edition

Cheesecake! The Golden Girls made eating cheesecake a nightly ritual on the hit television series. The pastry chef who made those luscious and delicious cheesecakes and many other foods for hit sitcoms was George Geary. He later became the first award winning pastry chef for the Walt Disney Company at Disneyland. Geary’s cheesecakes became one of his most popular culinary calling cards that he published his favorite recipes in his first cookbook, 125 Best Cheesecake Recipes in 2002, and it was such a hit that a follow up book, The Cheesecake Bible was published in 2008 and became a best-seller.

I loved the hints and tips at the front of the cookbook as well as how easy the recipes are to follow. There are even recipes for the different kinds of cookies you need for the different crusts, if you don’t want store bought cookies you can make them from scratch!

After a quick look through the cookbook I had a list of 12 cheesecakes that I couldn’t wait to make! I had to be reasonable though so I decided to make one for each of our two Thanksgiving celebrations. For the Foster Thanksgiving I made the Salted Caramel Cheesecake Bars on page 265. They were delicious, a huge hit! Unfortunately, they cut very messy and I didn’t take any pictures of them. For Schultz Thanksgiving I made the Chocolate Chunk Peanut Butter Cheesecake on page 108. Wow! This cheesecake is a bite of rich, creamy, deliciousness. That is the recipe I am sharing here today. Chocolate Chunk Peanut Butter Cheesecake

Oh my goodness! This Chocolate Chunk Peanut Butter Cheesecake recipe from The Cheesecake Bible is amazing!

Ingredients

Crust

• 1 1/4 cups cookie crumbs, peanut butter or chocolate I used chocolate
• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour omit if using chocolate cookies
• 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted

Filling

• 2 lbs cream cheese softened
• 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
• 4 large eggs at room temperature
• 1 cup creamy peanut butter
• 3 TBS lemon juice fresh squeezed
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 2 cups semisweet chocolate chunks

Topping

• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1/4 cup granulated sugar
• 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
• 1 TBS lemon juice fresh squeezed
• 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chunks

Instructions

• Preheat oven to 350°F.  Make sure you have a 9-inch cheesecake pan or springform pan with 3-inch sides.

Crust

• In a bowl, combine cookie crumbs, flour (if using peanut butter cookies), and butter. Press into the bottom of cheesecake pan and freeze.

Filling

• In a mixer bowl fitted with a paddle attachment, beat cream cheese and sugar on medium-high speed until very smooth, about 3 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Mix in peanut butter. Mix in lemon juice and vanilla. Fold in chocolate chunks by hand.
• Pour over frozen crust, smoothing out to sides of pan. Bake in preheated over until top is light brown and center has a slight jiggle to it, 45-55 minutes. Let cool on the counter for 10 minutes (do not turn the oven off). The cake will sink slightly.

Topping

• In a bowl, combine sour cream, sugar, peanut butter, lemon juice, and vanilla. Pour into center of cake and spread to edges. Sprinkle with chocolate chunks. Bake for 5 minutes more. Let cool in pan on wire rack for 2 hours. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 6 hours before serving

Notes

To prevent cracking bring all ingredients to room temperature before using and incorporate the eggs one at a time.
