The holidays are here! Our house guest arrived yesterday and we worked tirelessly over the last few weekends making our home ready for her arrival. No matter how hard we clean, stink still happens. After I had deep cleaned my office turned guest bedroom we went out to dinner. When we arrived home we noticed Mushu had pooped on my office floor! She never poops in the house, but I guess the clean floor seemed inviting to her. I cleaned up her mess and sprayed some Febreze Air Effects Fresh Twist Cranberry to get rid of her stink.

We cleaned the bathrooms and even changed out the sinks and faucets! For the 16 years that we were a homeschooling family, fall was the start of our new year. Forget January 1st, the new school year was when we started our new schedules for schooling, extra-curriculars and church activities. Now that the kids are adults I still like to give our home a fall reset. Here in Florida we don’t get the cooler temperatures till the end of October. We don’t get leaves changing colors or lots of other distinctly “fall” things either. This is why I manufacture some fall in my wardrobe and decor to remind me what season it is.

This year our fall reset finds us in the middle of a living room makeover. In August we bought a new couch, loveseat and huge ottoman. Next we want to paint and then get new side tables, lights and curtains. This is a slow process and while I’m on the lookout for the new accessories, the painting will have to wait until it is cool enough to open the windows.

Here are a few tips on how you can give your home an affordable Fall Reset.

1. De-Clutter-It has been about 6 months since Spring cleaning. We all have places that catch all the items that don’t have permanent homes. While you are de-cluttering make sure you fill up a box or bag with items that can be handed down or donated.
2. Deep clean the floors– I have laminate in my living room and hall and it needs to be swept daily. I also use my new and improved Swiffer Wet Jet to keep my floors clean and shiny.
3. Add some fall decor-Decorate with pumpkins, fall colored leaves and pinecones to bring the season inside.
4. Refresh the air-In my house I live with my dog, my husband and my adult son. All 3 of those things bring smells into my home that are not pleasant. Thankfully I have the woodsy Big Sur scented Febreze Fabric Refresher and Febreze Air Effects. With just a few squirts my home smells more like a forest and less like a locker room.

What is being Noseblind?

Being Noseblind is The gradual acclimation to the smells of one’s home, car, or belongings, in which the affected does not notice them (even though their guests do).

We all get acclimated to the odors around us. Have you even walked into someone’s house and instantly noticed the smell of cat litter? I have. The owner often doesn’t notice the smell because their olfactory has categorized the litter smell as “normal” and it doesn’t bother them the way it does someone for whom that smell is not normal.

Our Noseblind Test

We invited our friends Bob and Kim over for dinner and a movie. I made Creamy Italian Chicken (recipe will be on the blog tomorrow), Parmesan Noodles and Garlic Bread. The first smells everyone noticed were of the food either the garlic or Italian dressing scent. After dinner we chatted a bit and then I made some microwave popcorn as we settled in to watch The Perfect Summer (movie review was posted on the blog this morning). The popcorn smell overtook the dinner smells as we sat in the living room watching the movie.

By the end of the movie you could still smell the popcorn, though some of the scent had faded away. Next I plugged in the Febreze Noticeables in the kitchen, lit the Febreze Candle in the living room and sprayed Febreze Fabric Refresher on the couch. Instantly the predominant scent was the Meadows and Rain in the living room and the Hawaiian Aloha in the kitchen.

Febreze has been my go-to brand for air freshening products for years because they clean the air and don’t just mask the odors with stronger scents. The Noseblind test showed us all how quickly we become accustomed to the scents around us and that we need to make a conscious effort to clean the air in our homes regularly so that we don’t become Noseblind to the prevalent odors in our homes.

We chose to set it in the small bedroom my 2 teenage boys share with their pet hamster…there are always odd smell emanating from that room. Then to add to the stench we included sniffing Jordan’s bowling bag, bowling shoes and a pair of crusty socks we found in his bag! Here is Jordan’s reaction…

I am not usually a fan of “linen” scented air fresheners but I really like the Febreze linen and sky scent it is very clean and fresh. We use Febreze all the time to keep our home smelling clean and fresh.
