“The wilderness must be explored!!” I was so excited back in January when Disney World announced that it would be adding a Wilderness Explorers activity to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The new attraction opened June 1st and I have visited Animal Kingdom twice since then and I have earned badges on both of my visits.
I LOVE the Wilderness Explorers and you will too. It is fun, educational and a great way to get the kids to pay closer attention to their surroundings while they travel throughout the park. You do NOT have to be a kid to be a Wilderness Explorer, both joined the Wilderness Explorers, you do need to be a kid at heart though-willing to do the activities and have some fun.
Your adventure begins at the Wilderness Explorer’s Headquarters which is located on the bridge connecting The Oasis and Discovery Island. There you will meet your Troop Leader, learn the call, receive your field guide and instructions as well as your first badge before being sent on your journey.”The wilderness must be explored! Caw, Caw, Roar!”
We chose to head to Dinoland, U.S.A first where we earned our Signaling Badge and our Fossil Badge. Later in the day it was off to Africa for my Safari Badge, African Culture Badge, Ham Radio Badge, Hiking Badge, Birding Badge, Tracking Badge, and Gorilla Badge. All of those badges are on the Kilimanjaro Safari queue, the Warden’s post at the ride exit or while walking the Pangani Forest Trail. Before leaving the park that day I stopped back at headquarters to receive my Animal Find Badge. So, that was 11 badges in less than 3 hours. That makes me a Minnow! On my next trip to the park I only earned 1 badge my Mt. Everest Badge. There are 30 badges in all so I need 8 more to become a Fish and 18 more to become a Senior Wilderness Explorer.
I totally enjoy doing the exploring and earning my badges. There is so much to learn about the animals, their habitats and the world around us. I can’t wait to go back with my 7yo little buddy, we will have so much fun earning badges together! On my first day as a Wilderness Explorer I explored with my friend John aka BigFatPanda, we had a lot of fun!

Aww! It looks fun, even though I’m not one for going outside and exploring.
