Instead of using bright
It has been a while since I have made a new dessert. Last year I made this awesome Rainbow Cake for our Easter celebration so I figured it was time to make a different colorful cake. I’ve seen lots of Tie Dye Cakes on Pinterest so it was time to give it a try. Instead of using bright, typical tie dye colors, I chose spring colors for this cake.
- White Cake Mix-plus eggs oil and water as required on box
- 2-3 liquid food coloring
- White Frosting
- Pre-heat oven according to directions on cake mix box.
- Using non-stick spray, coat your fluted pan well.
- Make the cake batter as directed.
- Divide the batter into 3 bowls.
- Mix a different food color into each bowl of batter. I used purple, yellow and green.
- Pour half of batter 1 into the bottom of the pan.
- Pour half of batter 2 on top of batter 1.
- Pour half of batter 3 on top of batter 2.
- Repeat the last three steps. DO NOT MIX THE BATTER.
- Bake according to the directions on the box.
- Allow cake to cool 10 minutes in pan.
- Turn pan onto cake plate and allow to cool 1 hour.
- Divide the can of frosting into 2 or 3 bowls.
- Microwave each bowl for 10 seconds.
- Mix a different food coloring into each bowl.
- Drizzle the frosting over the cake, alternating colors.
I brought the cake to church and shared it with my class of 3-5th grade girls. They loved it! The cake looked cool and it was very moist and delicious. I love how this can be a different cake every time, depending on which colors you choose. Maybe I’ll make a red, white and blue cake for the 4th of July!

I admit that I don’t like to bake anything fancy, but this looks so easy to do that I can give it a try. It reminds me of the King Cake for Mardi Gras.

This looks super fun and easy to make! We have a traditional cake I’ve been making for years for Easter but this could be fun for a birthday or the TEEN Awards!

I have never made a tied dyed cake and honestly thought they would be very complicated. This seems very doable, thanks for the tips!
