Last week we celebrated my nephew’s 11th birthday. He likes the interesting cakes I make so this time he asked for a baseball cake. I knew I had just the pan to make this happen, here is one of my easy recipes.
I pulled out my Betty Crocker Bake’n Fill 4 Piece Bake Set
that I received a few years ago for Christmas, but had never used. Jacob wanted a chocolate cake filled with mint chocolate chip ice cream, so that is what I made. This pan set requires 1 1/2 cake mixes so you can make cup cakes with the rest of your mix.
Grease the pans with Crisco, don’t forget to do the bottom side of the insert. I’d read online that cooking sprays just didn’t work well, so I used Crisco. Mix the cake mixes following the directions on the box. Fill the large dome and the flat round to the fill lines. Place the insert in the dome pan and twist to lock in place. you can then add cake mix into to insert but for us that cake never finished baking so I would just put some water in there to prevent the pan from burning and use the excess mix to make cupcakes or another small round cake like we did. Bake as instructed on the cake mix box, check with a toothpick before removing from oven. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes.
If you are filling the cake with ice cream you need to freeze the cake, still in the pan, for about an hour. This is so the ice cream won’t seep into the cake when you fill it.Ten minutes before you are ready to fill the cake, remove the ice cream from the freezer to soften. Remove the cake from the freezer and loosen it from the pan with a knife but DO NOT REMOVE IT. Now fill the cake with the softened ice cream.
Put the base cake on top of the filled dome cake.
Place your serving plate over the base cake and flip the entire cake over to remove from dome pan.
Quickly cover the cake in your base frosting and then freeze for about 30 minutes.
Remove from the freezer and decorate. I used vanilla frosting and red decorating gel.
The cake was delicious and a huge hit.
I need to think of other things I can use this cake pan for. Do you have any ideas? Please leave me a comment with your suggestions.

My mother in law gave me this pan recently to make my son’s birthday cake but had no instructions. Would you be able to tell me how long to bake the dome shape cake? Do I have to use the insert?
