I just watched the documentary “Americans with No Address”. This is not my first knowledge or activity with the homeless. My former church had a wonderful outreach to the homeless community including a weekly worship service and hot meal, a food pantry, and assistance to reach other necessary services available in our area. At my current church we serve underserved families in our community some are homeless, others are on the verge of homelessness, we meet as many needs as we can.

About Americans with No Address

First let me start off by saying thanks to Robert Craig Films for providing a sample of the product for this review. Opinions are 100% my own.

The Americans With No Address team is on a mission to raise awareness and offer solutions to homelessness in America. Through a comprehensive five-production approach, including the documentary “Americans With No Address” and the feature film “No Address,” which will be coming to theaters nationwide on February 28th, they aim to break the cycle of homelessness. These two films are part of a broader effort to build empathy and compassion for those experiencing homelessness. In addition to these powerful films, they have the novelization of the award-winning screenplay, a soundtrack, and an interactive study guide that guides people who want to be part of the solution in their own community.

The Documentary came about first to ensure the accuracy of the “No Address” feature film; our production team toured the country for several weeks, visiting and filming interviews in 20 major cities across 18 states facing various rates of homelessness and interviewed over 175 people. Those interviews inspired the documentary “Americans With No Address,” which captures the essence of what is causing the homeless crisis and portrays what solutions have been implemented and proven to show positive changes.

“Americans With No Address” information sheet.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts on Americans With No Address

“Americans With No Address” is eye-opening and the statistics they shared are mind-boggling. I couldn’t take notes fast enough to catch the statistics. Here is one that stood out, “This year 1/3 of Americans will have a friend or family member experience homelessness.” If that stat doesn’t make you catch your breath, I don’t know what would.

Three-fourths of America’s homeless deal with mental health issues. If they didn’t have them before they ended up on the streets, they developed them because they were there-anxiety, PTSD etc. Add to that large amount the fact that more than 75% are addicted to drugs, alcohol or both makes this problem not just a financial one but a healthcare one as well.

According to the documentary, the most successful transition programs in the country deal with the whole person physical, mental, and spiritual. These programs meet physical needs for shelter, food, and clothing while also supplying mental and physical healthcare and addiction treatment while also caring for the spiritual needs of community, purpose, and Salvation. These holistic programs meet people where they are and help them become who God created them to be. These are not government funded because the government won’t fund spiritual training.

The government’s method of dealing with homelessness is called Housing First. It’s goal is to get people off the street and into apartments, motels etc but it doesn’t include any treatment, training, or accountability so there is little to no healing and restoration for these people.

What Can We Do?

Watch the documentary, it is streaming on Prime. It provides solution-based suggestions, and I
highly suggest everyone visit www.AmericansWithNoAddress.com. Please connect with one of the homeless organizations in your community to share your time as a volunteer or make a financial donation.

Most importantly, people experiencing homelessness often feel invisible—even just one interaction, like saying hello, can change someone’s trajectory of life; please begin to see the human side of homelessness.

Synopsis

In this uplifting drama inspired by actual events, Nate (Charlie Rowe) suffers a near-fatal illness and is left a quadriplegic just weeks before departing for college. As Nate tries to adjust to his new life challenges, his mother (Oscar® winner* Marcia Gay Harden) helps him bring home an unlikely service animal, Gigi — a curious and intelligent capuchin monkey. Nate and Gigi form an unbreakable bond, but when it’s threatened by a group trying to outlaw capuchins, Nate’s family rallies behind him to help him regain what he needs most: hope.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

This is a hard review to write. I wanted to love Gigi & Nate, but I didn’t. On the other hand, I didn’t hate it either. I’ve been looking forward to this movie since I heard about it over the summer. I have an interest in service animals and I had never heard of a capuchin being one. The trailer looked entertaining so I was happy to check it out.

The movie is inspired by actual events, to me that makes it more interesting. Unfortunately the talented cast of veteran and newer actors didn’t have a great script to work with. The entire film felt pretty flat. A story that should have gripped us with emotion played more like a documentary than entertainment.

There was a lot of wasted time at the beginning of the movie, both in Gigi’s origin story, which wasn’t really necessary, and the 4th of July gathering at the beginning. Then it jumps from the hospital to 4 years later without letting the audience see or feel any of the difficulties Nate was experiencing that led them to wanting and needed a service animal. The movie never touched on why Nate was paired with a capuchin monkey instead of a more traditional service animal.

The middle of the movie is nice. We enjoyed getting to see Gigi & Nate bond and how Gigi helped with physical therapy and other needs. There was a sweetness in this part of the film, you could feel the love between the man and animal, even when other family members didn’t understand.

Then the movie starts to go downhill when the militant animal rights activist is introduced. For the most part, the heart leaves the story and what should have been another time of emotional upheaval, all you get is anger from both sides. The courtroom scene and the ending are very contrived.

My husband and I both felt the movie felt flat. We wanted to feel more and be more invested in the characters. I feel the jump from the hospital to 4 years in the future is one place that could have been used to help us feel empathy for Nate. The film was interesting and had potential that it just didn’t deliver on.

Many thanks to Collide Distribution for providing this product/product information for review. Opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product, TRAFFICKED, in exchange for this review and post.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month. It makes me sick to think that we need a month for something that should NEVER happen. Did you know that 700,000-900,000 women and girls are being sex trafficked in the USA today? Sex trafficking in the United States illicitly generates more than $30 billion annually. If those statistics don’t make you sick, you need to check your heart.

Human Trafficking is a cause that I have supported for several years, here on the blog, by being part of Team Freedom which supports Hope for Justice, locally supporting Selah Freedom, and by financially supporting a few other national and international organizations. People are being trafficked right here in our own backyards and we must first raise awareness and then do what we can to raise support.

About TRAFFICKED: A Parent’s Worst Nightmare

The film will be distributed through Virgil Films.

Bob Elder, President of Collide Media Group, shares, ”Awareness is the first step towards putting an end to these atrocities in our world.

TRAFFICKED is the story of Allison Riley (Sophie Bolen – THE HORSE DANCER, RODEO GIRL), a beautiful young girl with a bright future and a dream of becoming a veterinarian. On the eve of her 16th birthday, she sneaks out of her house to meet a handsome boy she met online, and disappears. Her parents, Joanna (Kristy Swanson – BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF) and Case (Mark Boyd – WHIP IT, “12 Monkeys”), contact the police who assume that Allison is just out with a boyfriend. They reluctantly hire Private Investigator John Belton (Dean Cain – Lois and Clark, GOD’S NOT DEAD ) who has a reputation for making his own rules. Belton quickly discovers that Allison had likely been trafficked by a handsome young man she met online, and that he’s on a race against time if the Riley’s hope to see their daughter again.
TRAFFICKED press release

My husband and I watched TRAFFICKED the other night. As all the movies we have watched about human trafficking have done, it touched us and angered us. We know that every second someone is missing is important and the fact that the police don’t consider a person “missing” until they have been gone for 48 hours is frustrating. You can travel far in 48 hours.

The story was intriguing, the acting was sometimes lacking in believability, and the production value was mediocre compered to other movies on this important topic. All of that aside, I still feel YOU need to see this movie. We need to wake up to what is happening around us. We need to be aware, which hopefully will move us to care, and then to get involved however we can.

Purchase TRAFFICKED after its release on Tuesday, January 26th and watch from the comfort of your own home!

Never has raising funds for a charity hit so close to home. Next month, October, is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. This month my company, Color Street is raising funds for two amazing charities that support parents and families suffering through pregnancy or infant loss through the sale of our nail set, Never Forgotten.

At 12:24am on December 24, 1984, I gave birth to a daughter, Brynn Ann. During the delivery she ingested a large amount of meconium. She was whisked away to NICU before I could ever see her. I was told her lungs were as black as a coal miner’s and she need to be helicoptered to a hospital 2 hours away with a higher level NICU.

They wheeled me to NICU where she was in an isolette and I couldn’t touch her. The nurse took a picture of her for me and then I was taken back to my room, where later that nurse a hospital volunteer who was tasked with bringing babies from the nursery to spend time with their mommies told me, “I’m sorry, I can’t find your baby”! I was released late that afternoon. I spent that Christmas Eve at home, praying for my baby girl.

My father and I planned to drive down to see her on the day after Christmas. Unfortunately, early in the morning on December 26, 1984 I received a phone call informing me that my baby girl, my Christmas angel, had passed away.

I know the pain and suffering of infant loss. I was a single mother walking a very dark road. Thankfully, my doctor gave me a pamphlet for Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss. I called them and they sent me lots of information that helped me process my grief. They were there when I needed them, and I’ve always been grateful.

Fast forward 31 years, my oldest son and his wife have trouble trying to conceive. Over 5 years, 11 miscarriages, and 3 failed rounds of IVF, our family walks the painful road of infant loss. On December 25, 2019, they announce that they are 3 months pregnant and things are looking good! Our rainbow baby, Harmony Iris was born on June 20, 2020.

We know Pregnancy and Infant Loss. We’ve walked it, lived it, we always will. We do what we can to spread the news that 1:4 women have experienced Pregnancy and Infant Loss!!! That’s 25% of women, that number is ridiculously too high. So many women don’t talk about it, they are ashamed that for whatever reason their body couldn’t carry a child to full term. They are too hurt because the child they did carry to full term didn’t live to see their first birthday.

This month, by purchasing the Never Forgotten dry nail polish set from Color Street for $13 + tax and shipping you can help support these moms. As part of the Color Street Foundation, $2.00 of every Never Forgotten Strip sold in September, up to $100,000 with be split between Share Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support and Star Legacy Foundation for stillbirth research, education, and awareness.

Maybe you aren’t 1 in 4, you are blessed to not have suffered this kind of loss, but I’m sure you know someone who has. Buy her this set of nails, give it to her in honor and in memory of the child(ren) she has lost. I promise you, it will mean the world to her. You can go to the Never Forgotten Nail strip directly here. Or you can click the SHOP button and scroll down to Nail Art. Also, we offer a Buy 3 Get 1 Free on all solids, glitters, and nail art so it’s a great way to stock up for yourself or for gifts.

Thank you for your love and support, from all the moms who are 1:4.

This post was sponsored by DePuy Synthes as part of an Ambassador Program for Influence Central

and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.
It has been a crazy few weeks…and they’re not over yet. On August 28th we headed out on a 2 week road trip from Florida that took us through Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan on the way up and all those states plus North Carolina and South Carolina on the way home. The reason for this trip was our son, Jordan’s wedding to Savannah.

After 2 long days of sitting in the car my hips were hurting. On Thursday, we spent the day decorating the tent for the reception. While doing that I got to stretch my hips out, thank goodness, but then my knees started hurting from all of the walking around and going up and down stairs, we seldom have to do stairs in Florida! Friday afternoon we took a bit of a break from all the wedding prep to visit Savannah’s favorite Michigan beach at Grand Haven State Park. The beach was lovely and the water was a crisp 65°. We walked along the beach, which is always difficult with my knees, then we walked part way out on the pier to the lighthouse. By then my knees were hurting and I knew I couldn’t make it to the end of the pier and then all the way across the beach back to our car so, unfortunately, we had to cut our visit short and cut through the camping area so that I didn’t need to navigate the sand again.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-55230 size-full" title="Take a step to find out if joint replacement surgery is an option to get you back to doing the things you love.
I get so frustrated when my knee and/or hip pain make me miss out on activities I love. I feel even worse when my pain causes others to miss out on the fun too. Anyway we went back to the hotel and got ready for the wedding rehearsal and dinner. I know firsthand that knee and hip pain can often affect more than just your physical mobility. It can also affect your personal relationships. I am so thankful that I have an understanding and caring husband and family. They get it when I need to take a break. I hate it though because I feel like I can do more but the knee pain keeps me down. If your pain is affecting your relationships it might be time to take the next step to find out if joint replacement surgery is an option to get you back to doing the things you love with the people you care about. Life is a lot more fun when you Hit Play.

Thankfully, wedding day went off without a hitch. I was able to do a few line dances and when it was time to do a mini swing dance lesson my friend Avery, who is an amazing swing dancer, danced with me and helped me through the basic steps. After about 2 songs I needed to take a break and get off my knees for a while. I love to dance and don’t have the opportunity to dance very often so I over did it, knowing I’d be hurting the next day.

Thankfully Sunday was just brunch and then we hit the road to Ohio so I was sitting most of the day and I could let my knees rest. We are very careful when doing a lot of driving to stop at least every 3 hours and get out and stretch and walk around. This really helps us feel better for the long haul. This trip really has me wondering if it is time for me to talk to my doctor about joint replacement surgery. I need to hop over to TimeToHitPlay and learn more about it. If you are suffering with knee or hip pain, maybe you should click over too.

If you are looking for an inspiring true life, family story, Redeeming Ruth by Meadow Rue Merrill is the book for you. This book, at its core, is an international adoption story, as a whole it is so much more. It is a story of faith, trust, struggle, love, joy, heartache, and family.

About Redeeming Ruth by Meadow Rue Merrill

Redeeming Ruth is the inspirational, true story of an abandoned baby, a devastating diagnosis, and the way God loves broken, hurting people through us, even though we too may be broken and hurt.

When Meadow met her, Ruth was a sixteen-month-old child some church friends were hosting from an orphanage in Uganda. She had cerebral palsy and was so weak she couldn’t lift her head. Although Meadow had always felt a call to adopt, she wasn’t sure if she was the right person to raise this special child. But Ruth’s infectious and joyful smile prevailed over Meadow and her family–and their whole community. None of their lives would ever be the same.

Part family drama, part travel adventure, and part memoir, Redeeming Ruth is the riveting, against-all-odds story of the most unlikely pairing of a small-town New England family and their adventure in adopting Ruth, an orphan girl from Uganda. Honest, raw, and illuminating, this book explores what happens when we sacrificially reach out and share God’s love with others. While the Merrills realized it would be a tough road, they didn’t foresee the challenges and joys that would overwhelm them with hardship, laughter, and a deep and exuberant love, the love of an orphan girl redeemed.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

I loved this book, I hated when I had to put it down. Meadow is a wonderful storyteller and her mother’s heart showed in every word. I appreciated the author’s honesty about her emotions, stress, and questioning her faith. Life is far from perfect, no matter what Instagram may make you think, and Meadow was honest about the struggles of international adoption, special needs parenting, and life in general.

There are two themes in this book that touched me deeply.

We aren’t responsible for the outcome, we are simply responsible to love.

Everything life takes, love restores.

Powerful, huh?

There was one thing that annoyed me about Redeeming Ruth by Meadow Rue Merrill. At the beginning of each chapter, before the chapter started, there is italicized anecdotes, like journal entries that foreshadow how the story ends. I didn’t like knowing where the story was headed before I got there, if that makes sense.

The book is available on Amazon in hardcover and Kindle editions as well as from other booksellers.

Saturday, February 17, 2018 is Random Acts of Kindness Day. How beautiful is a day dedicated to kindness? As you think about how you will celebrate this awesome day, I want to give you a few ideas. Of course you could always pay for the person in line behind you at the coffee shop or fast food joint but that is so 2016. This year I want to encourage you to get involved as a family with The Kindness Rocks Project.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-54619" src="http://themommaven.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Pin-compressed-3.jpg" alt="Saturday, February 17, 2018 is Random Acts of Kindness Day.
It’s a fun family project, find or buy some flat rocks, river rocks work great, do a base coat of paint, markers to decorate with an uplifting or inspirational saying, seal with a clear coat or Mod Podge outdoor sealant. Once dry place them in public places where people can be inspired. There are a few more ideas and safety rules about where you can and cannot leave your rocks so make sure you check out the link above for that information.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-54622" src="http://themommaven.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/kit.jpg" alt="Saturday, February 17, 2018 is Random Acts of Kindness Day.
I decorated 5 rocks over the weekend and then on Monday I enlisted Ron and Jordan’s help in placing the rocks around our area. Jordan left his rocks outside his chiropractor’s office, and outside the church he works at. Ron left his at 7-11, and McDonald’s, and I left mine at the Walmart Neighborhood Market. Take a picture when you leave your rocks and then you can add them to the map on The Kindness Rocks Project website.

Same Kind of Different as Me

Another way to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day is to watch a movie all about acts of kindness. Same Kind of Different as Me is rated PG13 and may not be suitable for the youngest family members. “An inspiring, beautiful story about love” (Dave Morales, Fox TV Houston), Same Kind of Different as Me arrives on Blu-ray and DVD February 20, 2018 from Paramount Home Media Distribution.

Based on The New York Times best-selling book, and recipient of the Dove Foundation seal of approval for ages 12+, Same Kind of Different as Me follows successful art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear, Heaven Is For Real) and his wife Debbie (Renée Zellweger, Bridget Jones’s Diary), who seemingly have the perfect life. But when their faith and family are tested, an unlikely bond with a homeless drifter (Djimon Hounsou, Blood Diamond) leads them on a remarkable journey that forges an everlasting friendship. “Loaded with surprising twists and turns” (Jim Ferguson, KGUN9 ABC Tucson), Same Kind of Different as Meshows how a simple act of kindness can change everything.

The Same Kind of Different as Me Blu-ray includes over an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus content, including deleted and extended scenes, featurettes, and commentary by director Michael Carney, writer Ron Hall and writer Alexander Foard. The DVD includes the feature film only.

Mom Maven’s Movie Review

I was familiar with the story behind the book and movie Same Kind of Different as Me. Ron and Denver were guests on our local Christian Radio station’s morning show and became friends with my friends, the DJs. I never did get around to reading the book so I was glad to have a chance to watch the movie. The movie wasn’t quite what I was expecting, it was mostly a look back at how an art dealer and an angry homeless man became friends, helped each other and the homeless community. I never realized the huge part Debbie, Ron’s wife played in their becoming friends. It is a well done, inspiring movie that shows how simple acts of kindness can change a person’s life.

Whatever you do I hope you celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17th and the rest of the year too.

The money raised goes to strengthen Orphanages and provide for the needs of Orphans around the World. You will also be helping to provide a safe Christian upbringing for Orphan Children.

In the orphanages served by the Orphan Run 4 Hope it only costs $20 per month to feed one child for that month! Most of us can afford to donate at least $20 to such a great cause. My personal goal is to raise at least $480 and feed 2 orphans for an entire year. That is just 24 readers of The Mom Maven giving $20. We could do much more than that, couldn’t we? Please stop by my FUNDRAISING PAGE and do what you can to help the orphans.

I’m no runner but I did do several 5ks a few years back and I am now training to participate in the Orphan Run 4 Hope 5k that my church is sponsoring. It will be a fun morning for our church family and friends at a local park. There will be a 5k, a 1k, and a Kids Adventure Run. The runs will take place on Saturday, April 14, 2018 and my training and fundraising starts now. I have a fundraising thermometer on the sidebar of the blog so you can see how that is progressing and I’ll be updating my training progress on my social media pages so make sure you are following along on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Please feel free to cheer me on when you see my #orphanrun4hope posts.

Through the Orphan Run 4 Hope we are literally being the hands and feet of Jesus reaching out to the orphans and loving on and caring for them just as it says in James 1:27 NIV “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

I appreciate your support!

This is a post I wish I didn’t feel compelled to write. This is a post I hope my mother doesn’t read. This past weekend when everything happened with Harvey Weinstein, it shed a bright light on the sexual abuse and sexual harassment that is rampant in Hollywood, but most women in mainstream America could relate as well. The stories of powerful directors, producers, etc preying on child actors have been told for years. Those who spoke up were hushed, blackmailed, or black balled. Women and some men have spoken up over the years about the heinous sexual harassment and abuse taking place in Hollywood. Few listened, even fewer acted. Some thought, “Well, that’s how it is in Hollywood.” But that’s not the only place it happens. Sexual abuse happens in small towns and big cities, in churches, schools, and workplaces; it happens everywhere.

Sunday afternoon, actress Alysaa Milano spoke up, in one simple tweet.

“Suggested by a friend: If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote “Me too” as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.”

As of the writing of this story her original post has been replied to 58,000 times, been retweeted 21,000, and been liked 43,000. I think she hit a nerve.

I saw it not on Twitter, but on Facebook, Sunday evening. I don’t usually jump on the bandwagon of stuff like this on Facebook, but as soon as I saw it, memories came rushing back and I had to stand and be counted. Since then almost every one of my female Facebook friends and some of my male friends as well, have shared Me Too or #MeToo in their status. It breaks my heart. It has to stop. It is not acceptable.

My Me Too Sexual Abuse Experiences

Youth group grades 7-10: Being groped on every trip that took us off church property. It was like it was a church sanctioned activity. We traveled in the back of pickup trucks with toppers on them. There were mattresses and blankets back there so our trip would be comfortable. We always sat guy-girl-guy-girl around the edge of the truck, huddled under blankets because it was cold in Massachusetts, and once the truck started moving to wherever we were headed…so did the hands. It was unnerving, unsettling, unwanted and uncomfortable. When I talked to a youth group leader about it, she told me it was part of growing up. She said I could choose to ride in the church van with the lame kids but if I wanted to be popular, I should ride in one of the trucks. I continued to ride in the trucks, I wanted to be popular.

Sleeping over at a friend’s house and waking up with her older brother’s hands groping my breasts. He kissed me on the cheek and told me it was our secret, then he crawled out of the room. The next time I slept over I woke up to his hands in my underwear. When I told him to stop he kissed me on the cheek and told me it was our secret, then he crawled out of the room. I told my friend the next morning, she said I was just dreaming…I wasn’t.

My senior year of high school I was date raped, though I didn’t know that term at the time. I was raped by my boyfriend who was 6 years older than me. It was several years later I was in a waiting room of a doctor’s office and an afternoon talk show was talking about date rape and statutory rape. That is when I realized that even if you are in a relationship, if you do not consent to sex, and that night I had said “NO” many times, it is rape. Since I was 17 and he was 26, it was also statutory rape and he could have gone to jail…if I had spoken up. Instead I continued to date him for 7 more months…until he hit me. Funny enough, I knew that was wrong and I broke up with him on the spot.

There are others too.

The doctor I worked for who regularly groped and fondled all of the young ladies that worked for him.

The co-worker who came on to me regularly and then was incredibly mean to me when I reported him. We were the only two people working in a satellite office and I left my job because of his vulgar talk.

The old man in Walmart who grabbed my butt in line after he told me how beautiful I was.

The “big wig” at the blogging conference that promised to take my blog to the big time if I went back to his hotel room with him.

and many more…

Ladies, unfortunately it seems we have all experienced sexual abuse or harrassment in our lifetime. Now is the time to stand up and not just say ME TOO but NO MORE. If/When it happens we need to step up and speak out. We need to report it. We need to teach our daughters that none of this is ok and there is no shame in being the victim. We need to teach our sons that it is NEVER ok to say or do vulgar things to another person male or female. We are to be treasured and cared for, not objectified and demeaned.

We have lost our moral compass, there are no more boundaries, and the line between right and wrong seems to move from person to person. There are absolutes in this world, God gave us His Word so that we would know right from wrong and repent for the wrongs that we have done. As a nation we have strayed away from God in the name of “freedom”. True freedom is only found in the saving grace of Jesus. We need to ask God to forgive our nation and heal our land.

“if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 NKJV.

Seek Help

If you are struggling to get past the shame or depression caused by your sexual abuse, please talk to someone. A trusted friend, a counselor, your pastor’s wife. We all process abuse differently but sharing it and re-framing it and calling it what it is, abuse that was forced on you, helps us heal and move forward and become stronger. You don’t have to carry your burden alone.

Hold your head up and shine your light bright. The world needs you!

I am a huge supporter of organizations that are working hard to free people from human trafficking. I’ve known about the movie, PRICELESS for a while now. I am a fan of For King and Country, my boys have toured with them and work with them whenever they are in our area so this project is very important to me on several levels.

Priceless Synopsis

PRICELESS is a powerful story of James Stevens who was, at one time, a good man with a great life — but that was then and this is now. After the tragic death of his wife and losing custody of his little girl, James is at the darkest crossroad of his life. Angry, desperate, and unable to hold down a steady job, he agrees to drive a box truck on a shady, one-time trip cross country for cash — no questions asked. But when he discovers what he is delivering is actually who, he is compelled to save two beautiful and frightened sisters who are unaware of the danger that awaits them. Can love, strength, and faith redefine his past and change the course of his future? This unlikely hero risks it all to save these women, confront the forces that oppose him and ultimately discover the life he was meant to live.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts on PRICELESS

The character of James Stevens, played by Joel Smallbone of For King and Country, is a flawed man in the darkest time of his life. He takes a job that seems simple enough, until he realizes that his cargo is human, two sisters to be exact. Throughout the movie he does what he can to make this horrible situation right for these girls and eventually others like them.

The movie is well acted. The story is painfully slow at times with no real story arc. The script focuses more on the plight of James than it does on the girls being sold as sex slaves. The very ending while hopeful, seems very improbable for an out of work, down-on-his-luck man. While I know the movie is a well-intentioned attempt to bring the darkness of human trafficking to light, the story falls flat and doesn’t grab the viewer and keep them interested.

PRICELESS is rater PG-13 for violence and mature themes.
