I love pretzels and if you are a regular reader of The Mom Maven, you know that my new favorite flavor combination is salted caramel pretzel. When Fleischmann’s Simply Homemade asked me to create a new recipe using their new Pretzel Creations I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to create Salted Caramel Pretzel Bites. In all honesty, this task was harder than I thought it would be. The recipe I am sharing today is my third, and best attempt at creating this sweet and salty treat.
I want to start off by thanking Fleischmann’s for the awesome package of goodies they sent me to help me create my recipe. The package included 1 Whiteware 3 Bowl Server, 1 Premium Mixing Bowl, 2 Williams-Sonoma Oven Mitts, 3 Pepper Palace Pretzel Dips and 1 sample of Simply Homemade Pretzel Creations. Many of these items will come in handy in my kitchen on a regular basis. I am most excited about the Oven Mitts because their yellow/gold color perfectly matches my kitchen walls!
The package of Pretzel Creations includes everything you need to make basic pretzels except for water and vegetable oil. The package contains pretzel mix, yeast, baking soda and pretzel salt.
- 1 Fleischmann's Simply Homemade Pretzel Creations Mix
- 6 3/4 cups hot water divided
- 1 TBS vegetable oil
- 1 pkg Kraft Caramels
- Stir together pretzel mix and yeast packet in a large mixing bowl.
- Measure 3/4 cup very warm water (120-130 degrees)
- Add water and oil to dry ingredients
- Stir until thoroughly combined (Dough may be stiff; use hands if desired)
- Cover dough and let rise 25 minutes in a warm, draft-free place (Dough will not double in size)
- While the dough is rising, unwrap 24 caramels, cut them in half and set them aside
- Place dough on a clean dry surface and shape into a loaf
- Divide the loaf into 8 equal pieces
- Cover with a towel to prevent dough from drying
- Roll each piece into a 12-inch rope
- Cut rope into 6 equal pieces
- Roll each piece into a ball and then place on a baking sheet, and make an indentation in the middle
- Cover the pretzel bites with towel
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees, line a cookie sheet with parchment paper
- Combine 6 cups of water with the contents of the baking soda packet in a large deep saucepan until mixture boils
- Using a slotted spoon, dip one pretzel bite at a time into the boiling water
- Allow pretzel to slide off the spoon into the water for 10-15 seconds
- Remove the pretzel from the water and place on the prepared baking sheet
- Continue with the remaining pretzels
- Press a piece of caramel into each of the pretzel bites
- Sprinkle each pretzel bit with pretzel salt
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown
- Cool on a wire rack
Baking soda can be corrosive to certain materials. We do not recommend using saucepans that have hard anodized finishes.
This recipe is a bit messy but the results are delicious. I shared these with the girls club at church and the girls really enjoyed this sweet and salty treat.
