Turn It Up Ice Show

We attended the 8pm showing of the Turn It Up Ice Show at the Moroccan Palace Theater. Entering the well-air conditioned theater was a relief after spending a few hours out in the summer Florida heat with a heat index of 101°! The show was good, what I could see of it. The man in front of us kept switching seats with his kids because they kept complaining they couldn’t see. At times his daughter was standing on his lap impeding his view so he leaned way out into the aisle to try and record video of the show. At one point he and his 2 kids left their seats to sit on the floor in the aisle but a worker came and told them to get back in their seats. I had to stop trying to shoot Instagram videos because in every 60 sec video, he got in the way!

I was having trouble finding words to describe the show beyond saying it was good is just lame. As we exited the theater, my husband described it as something we would expect to see on a cruise ship but not good enough for a theme park. I agreed, and told him I was using his words.

Party Zones, Rides and Food

We arrived at the park at about 5:15pm, there is no posted start time for Busch Gardens Summer Nights. We headed over to ride Cobra’s Curse since Ron has never had the chance to ride this yet, and he wanted to ride on an empty stomach. The sign said 30 minutes wait time so we made a quick trip to the restrooms before getting in line. As we walked up to the queue there was an announcement that Cobra’s Curse was having technical difficulties. It is the only coaster in this mostly coaster park that I will ride so we were bummed We left the ride area and headed to the first party zone.

Fiesta Festa

We weren’t ready to eat yet and the food offerings in this party zone were the least interesting to us mojo pork with beans and rice, jerk chicken empanadas, and chicharrons. We are anti-alcohol so we paid no attention to those offerings. At this time there was a DJ pumping out typical party tunes including the ChaCha Slide. No one was dancing though a few people were trying to walk and do the moves. There was no party feel at all. We came back at about 9pm to see if the atmosphere had changed and the DJ was gone and there was Latin music playing through a very poorly PA system. No one was spending time in the party zone, everyone was just passing through.

Vibin’ Village

After our first visit to the Fiesta Festa we hopped on the classic Sky Ride and traveled over to Stanleyville and the Vibin’ Village. Here another DJ was playing the ChaCha Slide and he had a few people actually dancing. The food choices here were chicken mafi with peanut sauce, tamarind shrimp watermelon cooler, and smoked chicken pocket with harissa. I ordered the shrimp and Ron got the Chicken Mafi. The Tamarind Shrimp Watermelon Cooler was rather flavorless and only had 3 shrimp in it. The Chicken Mafai with Peanut Sauce was ok but it too was short on flavor. The sauce on the outside was good but the meat itself fell flat.

Next we wandered over to Jungala where we saw 1 tiger. The Ron waited in line for the Ubanga Banga Bumper Cars. We felt sorry for the poor guy working this ride. He was alone and he had to measure kids to see if they were tall enough to drive, count cars and people, deal with parents telling him their kids were taller than his measurement said they were. Run across the floor to the exit which is also the special needs entrance and meet with people waving yellow papers at him and put up with the 7, yes 7 people who left things in cars on their previous rides! There was at least a 5 minute turnover between each ride because this one poor guy had to do everything himself.

Luau Landing

After the bumper cars we headed to Pantopia and Luau Landing. The food offerings here were Huli Huli Chicken, Hawaiian Barbecue Ribs, and Pineapple Cheesecake Parfait. I love Huli Huli Chicken and I make it at home, so I ordered that and Ron got the ribs. Again, in both dishes flavor was lacking. We were disappointed, after the wonderful food we had at the Busch Gardens Food and Wine Festival this past spring, we came with high expectations and the Summer Nights food and wine just didn’t compare. If you need your daily fix of assorted wines, you may visit the nearest wine store in your area.

While we ate we watched the Luau entertainment which consisted of 2 guys playing drums to tracks while a dancer and a stilt walker tried to teach little kids to hula. Again, not the party atmosphere portrayed by the Busch Gardens advertisements. We stopped in at Twisted Tails and got an order of Pretzel Bites and an order of Cinnamon Pretzel Bites. The regular pretzel bites were delicious, buttery, and soft, the best food we ate all night. The Cinnamon Pretzel Bites were hard and seemed stale, like they had been sitting under the heat lamp in the grab and go section too long.

At the end of the night, for us, we decided we wanted to ride the train and then stop in at Sultan’s Sweets for the pineapple soft serve we had seen advertised when we entered the park. We arrived at the train station and were informed that the train had left 5 minutes earlier and would be back in 40 minutes!!!! Obviously we didn’t wait to ride the train. We headed to Sultan’s Sweets and when we ordered the pineapple soft serve we were told they had run out, 2 1/2 hours before the park closed! Not a great way to end and already underwhelming evening.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

As I said earlier the concept was good but the execution was flawed. Busch Gardens wasn’t designed with multiple open areas for party zones. Trying to create them in busy walkways between rides was just awkward. The entertainment staff was too small and didn’t get the people who were in the areas involved with the dancing. We brought glow necklaces and bracelets with us because the ads show a fun nighttime glow party. We were the ONLY people we saw all night with any glow gear on, we didn’t even see vendors selling it trying to create the atmosphere.

We enjoy Busch Gardens and many of their special events. You can’t hit a home run every time. I’m sure next year will be better.

SeaWorld Summer Nights

From June 20 – August 8, SeaWorld features Summer Nights, where families can stay later for more thrills and laughs. Nightly festivities include:

• Celebrate America Concert Series – Every Saturday and Sunday guests can enjoy all-American performances by a variety of artists and genres at this all-new summer concert series. The celebration of America continues throughout the park with all-American food and daily happy hours. Plus, pass holders can enjoy a complimentary sample of a tasty brew. Shamu Stadium will transform with stylistic lighting and colorful backdrops to create a social and celebratory atmosphere ending with a fireworks finale spectacle.
• Late-Night Thrills –SeaWorld’s thrill rides are a whole different experience when the sun goes down. Guests can experience Kraken, a thrilling roller coaster, and Manta, a facedown, headfirst roller coaster where riders can skim, glide and fly like a manta ray, and many more.

Aquatica Island Nights

Beginning July 3, Aquatica heats things up with Island Nights presented by Coca-Cola® – an all-new beach party taking place every Friday and Saturday through August 8 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Guests can enjoy live DJs, dancing on the beach and an evening menu sizzlin’ with flavor at Waterstone Grill. All included with park admission to Aquatica.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

It has been a few years since I have been to Summer Nights at SeaWorld. Last time I was at that event the Shamu show was Shamu Rocks!, which we loved. It has been almost 5 years since we have visited Aquatica, but I will tell you that visiting a water park at night is a very cool experience. Now, the cherished entertainment spectacular is being extended by popular demand, Walt Disney World announced today.

“The return of Disney’s ‘Main Street Electrical Parade’ to the Magic Kingdom has been an overwhelming success,” said Magic Kingdom Vice President Phil Holmes.  “Guests begin cheering as soon as they hear the opening fanfare and see those fantastic floats covered in lights.  The parade is a magical part of a visit to the Walt Disney World Resort, so we’re thrilled to be announcing we’re leaving the lights on.”

Fronted by a new lead float starring Tinker Bell, Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” officially bowed at Magic Kingdom June 6, 2010.

Beloved by generations, the parade anchors Disney’s multi-park “Summer Nightastic!” entertainment extravaganza of attractions and events.  Once “Summer Nightastic!” draws to a close on Aug. 14 as previously announced, Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” will continue an open-ended run.

The iconic pageant of illuminated floats dates to 1972 when it first debuted at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., and became an instant hit.

Prior to its current run in Florida, the parade last performed at Walt Disney World Resort from 1999 into 2001.  This summer, Magic Kingdom guests have been treated to all-new elements that continue in the encore phase of the run:

• Tinker Bell leads the eye-filling procession, waving from the basket of a balloon floating gracefully above a magical garden shimmering in fairy light.
• Pinocchio and the boys from the classic film’s Pleasure Island sequence join the parade, and Snow White joins the Seven Dwarfs on a diamond mine float.
• There are new lighting effects, and the parade’s highly recognizable musical theme is brightened by new technology.

Beloved floats like the Honor America finale display – featuring the American flag and giant American eagle – are among parade favorites, along with popular characters such as Alice, Mickey Mouse and Goofy.

• Magic Kingdom – “Celebrate America Fireworks” will fill the sky at 9 p.m.  After the fireworks, guests can enjoy Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” of lights, music and magic at 10 p.m. and midnight.  Park hours are 8 a.m.-1 a.m.
• Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Special fireworks set to a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack will be presented at 9:50 p.m., providing guests with a bonus nighttime entertainment extravaganza to complement “Fantasmic!” (which will be at 9 and 10:30 p.m.).  Park hours are 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
• Epcot – “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth,” which features dazzling special effects, colorful lasers, brilliant fireworks and fiery torches all choreographed to a musical score, becomes even more dynamic on July 4 as the normal show is supplemented with a patriotic finale.  The performance begins at 10 p.m.  Earlier in the day, guests will be treated to the Voices of Liberty 4th of July Concert – featuring an expanded cast of singers plus the Spirit of America Fife and Drum Corps and Disney characters – at 12:30, 1:45 and 3 p.m. on the America Gardens Theatre stage.  In addition, Betsy Ross will be engaging guests inside The American Adventure with storytelling, while Ben Franklin will be making appearances on the promenade near the attraction.  Park hours are 9 a.m.-10 p.m.
• Disney’s Animal Kingdom – Guests can enjoy all the regular attractions and shows from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Last week my husband and I attended a VIP party at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay to experience Summer Nights. The event was attended by television, radio, newspaper people and some bloggers. Before the event we had to choose which track we wanted to attend, our choices were Adventure, Thrills or Chills; we chose Adventure.

We arrived at Busch Gardens and had trouble finding the preferred parking (where we had been instructed to park). I knew it was near the park entrance-not across the street with the regular parking, but there were no signs for preferred parking. We drove up to the visitor drop-off area and I jumped out of the car while hubby went off looking for the preferred parking area. As he looped back around the parking lot he noticed a lone parking attendant by the entrance where we had come in. My husband asked him where preferred parking was and the young man said, “Right here” and stepped aside and let him in!

While Ron was parking I went to the event check-in table where I received our credentials, two tickets to visit Adventure Island and then was told to proceed to Gwazi Pavillion. Ron met me at the check-in table and we entered the park and strolled to Gwazi Pavillion.

In the pavillion courtyard we were greeted by some interesting creatures, a bar and some lovely Hawaiian music.

Blue Tongued Skink

We entered Gwazi Pavillion, which was beautifully decorated in reds, yellows, and oranges. There was a DJ playing dance music and 2 dancers entertaining the growing crowd. There were several tables around the room and a series of buffet tables and a bar lined three of the walls. There were lots of fun food choices including sliders, chicken fingers, loaded tater tots, corn salad, watermelon, pulled pork, churros and strawberry shortcake!After dinner the DJ started announcing which groups were leaving on their tours. Our tour wasn’t scheduled to leave for about 40 minutes so Ron asked if we could go explore the park a bit and he was told that we could just be back 10 minutes before our scheduled tour time. As we were leaving the building…they announced our tour was leaving…35 minutes early! Good thing we didn’t leave or we would have missed the tour (later we ran into people who had missed their tour due to the confusion).

We headed out with our tour guide Steve, who first lead us to Walkabout Way…which was scheduled to open to the public in 3 days. I got to feed a kangaroo and pet a wallaby!

Next, we headed across the park to the Serengeti. Years ago we did the Serengeti Safari Tour for Aaron’s birthday. It is an amazing, educational adventure for anyone ages 5 and up. The tour costs $33.95 per person in addition to your theme park ticket.

We boarded our truck with tour guide Cindy and we were off to feed giraffes! Cindy was a fun and informative guide and she has an amazing rapport with the giraffes, especially Bernie.

After our time with the giraffes we walked back to Gwazi Pavilion for some more strawberry shortcake

At 8:25pm we moved the party to Gwazi Field to find our seats for Kinetix. We were escorted to a VIP seating area which had cute little candlelit tables and chairs, a bar, and a snack table with popcorn, nachos and rice krispie treats…just in case you were hungry. At 8:30pm the DJ took the stage and the party starters game out in their day-glo outfits to get the crowd dancing. They invited all of the kids…and kids at heart out into the aisles while they danced to the Cha-Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Hoe-Down Throwdown and Cotten-Eyed Joe. Once the crowd was energized and the sun had set it was time to start the show.

Kinetix is the perfect name for this non-stop show that includes singing, dancing, acrobatics, balancing acts, hula hoops, juggling and jump ropes! Words don’t do this show justice to here is some video we shot.

Kinetix is a great way to end your visit to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay this summer. You can see the show every night through August 15th as long as the weather cooperates.
