A few years ago a Facebook friend of mine posted that he working on a movie about Christian musician, Rich Mullins called Ragamuffin. I am very familiar with Mullins’ music, I saw him in concert once and I even spoke with him on the phone when I was working in Christian radio in the early 1990s. I have followed the movie’s production via my friend’s Facebook page for several years and Thursday night my friend Kim and I went to Neel Auditorium at State College of Florida for a showing of Ragamuffin.

About Ragamuffin: The True Story of Rich Mullins

Ragamuffin is the true story of Rich Mullins, a prodigy musician who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation.

An artistic genius, raised on a tree farm in Indiana by a weathered, callous father, Rich wrestled all of his life with the brokenness and crippling insecurity born of his childhood.

The Mom Maven’s Thoughts

While I am a fan of Rich Mullins’ music and I knew he wasn’t your stereotypical Christian artist of the 80s and 90s. I was not aware of his alcoholism or the verbal and emotional abuse he endured from his father throughout his life. These two intertwining themes were prevalent in the film.

The film is an emotional look at Rich’s life from his childhood through his tragic death at age 41. Michael Koch, who plays Mullins, does a wonderful job of capturing Mullins’ talent, passion, hurts and frustrations. The film was beautiful to look at, though there were some inconsistencies that drove Kim and I crazy, but I guess that comes from a long drawn out indie movie shoot.

All-in-all Ragamuffin is a must-see movie for Rich Mullins fans. The film is currently touring the US, please visit RagamuffinTheMovie.com to see if it is coming to your area.

Disclosure: I received 2 tickets to the movie for the purpose of this post. All opinions are 100% mine.
