A few years ago my friend’s Aunt Lynette, made Mostaccioli for a gathering we were at and my family loved it! I am always on the lookout for a new pasta recipe and to us, Aunt Lynette’s Mostaccioli recipe is pure comfort food.

I asked Lynette for the recipe and I have been making it a few times a year since then. I have tweaked the recipe a bit over the years and here it is for you to share with your family.

What is Mostaccioli?

Mostaccioli is a a long tubular pasta. Officially called Penne Lisce, named after the area in Southern Italy where it comes from. Penne are tube-shaped with angled ends cut to resemble a quill or pen point. Unlike Penne, which are ridged, Mostaccioli are smooth in texture. Of course, the day I made this recipe I could only find Mostaccioli Rigati which is ridged. Most Mostaccioli dishes are filled with cheesy goodness.

Aunt Lynette’s Mostaccioli Recipe

Ingredients

16 oz box of Mostaccioli

1.5 lbs ground beef

45 oz jar of spaghetti sauce divided

11 oz can condensed cheddar cheese soup

1 tsp black pepper

1/2 tsp Italian seasoning

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese divided

Mostaccioli Instructions

Prepare the pasta according to the package directions; rinse and drain

In a skillet, cook and crumble the ground beef until browned; drain

In a large bowl combine the ground beef, 30oz spaghetti sauce, soup, pepper and Italian spices. Stir to combine well.

Now add the cooked pasta and 2 cups of the shredded cheese to the sauce mixture.

Transfer it all to a greased 4 quart baking dish or 13×9 pan

Top with 8oz spaghetti sauce

Sprinkle remaining 1 cup of shredded cheese over the top.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

I usually serve this with a salad and some garlic bread for a nice dinner.

Freezing this Recipe

Now that there are only 2 of us at home, we bake half of the recipe and freeze the other half for future use. To do this I do steps 1-4 of the recipe as directed. Next I place half of the mixture in a 9 x 9″ pan and the other half I put in a large freezer zippy bag. On the bag I write “Mostaccioli and the date. Defrost overnight in bag in regrigerator. Place in greased 9 x 9” pan, sprinkle with 1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese and bake in a 350° oven for 40 minutes.

I hope you enjoy this Mostaccioli recipe and all of the easy recipes I share here on The Mom Maven. Please share them on your social networks. I just ask that you not copy and share the entire recipe with photos. Please use the sharing buttons below and share the link to this post. Thanks!
