We are often told to “follow our dreams” and for those of us raise in middle class America, that often seems possible. Christina Noble was born into the slums of Dublin, Ireland in 1944. Her father was a drunk and her mother did what she could to raise Christina and her 3 siblings. Christina’s mother died when Christina was only 10 years old. The children were separated and sent to different orphanages. Christina survived 4 years in the orphanage in western Ireland before she escaped and made her way back to Dublin, where she lived in a hole she had dug in the ground in a park.

At the age of 18 she traveled to England where she met her husband and had 3 children. Her marriage was very rocky and during this difficult time in her life she had a dream about Vietnam, and the street children there. That dream stayed with her for 20 years. In 1989 she headed to Vietnam to see what she could do for the street children of that country.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

As soon as I saw the trailer, I knew I wanted to see this movie. Christina Noble’s story is both poignant and uplifting. It shows that no matter what you go through in life, with God’s help, you can do good for others. Most people who are born into the slums also die there, not Christina. From a young age she used her talents to do what she could to make a better life for herself. She worked hard, had very candid conversations with God and even when her prayers weren’t answered with a “Yes” she pressed on.

The movie is well made and has great storytelling. The 3 actresses that play Christina at different stages of her life all do a wonderful job. I love that some of the children playing the parts of the Vietnamese children in the movie are from the Christina Noble Foundation, including the two girls in the picture above.

The Christina Noble Children’s Foundation is an international partnership of people dedicated to serving children in need of emergency and long-term medical care, nutritional rehabilitation, educational opportunities, vocational training and job placement, as well as children at risk of sexual and economic exploitation.
