Summertime is S’Mores time! We won’t get outside to make S’Mores over the fire pit until fall so for now, we make indoor S’Mores. A few weeks ago my 8yo buddy helped me make some really easy S’Mores bars and I thought we’d share them with you. This is a great recipe for getting kids involved in the kitchen. I found the original recipe at All Things Delicious and knew we would have to give it a try.

Easy S’Mores Bars

Printable recipe is below

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter or margerine, softened
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup flour
1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs (about 1/2 package of graham crackers)
2 cups mini marshmallows
6oz milk chocolate chips

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375°.

Grease the sides and bottom of a 9 inch baking pan.

Place graham crackers in a gallon zippy bag and crush with a rolling pin.

Place butter and brown sugar in a mixing bowl, beat until light and fluffy.

In a separate mixing bowl combine the flour and the graham cracker crumbs.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mix well.

Press the crust into the prepared baking pan.

I am a firm believer that when kids help in the kitchen they are willing to eat foods they may never have tried before. When they get to help prepare part of a meal they have a vested interest in the meal and they want to eat what they have made. In the book TIME for Kids Kids in the Kitchen Cookbook: Fun recipes for kids to make! there are many recipes for kids and parents to make together.

The book features step-by-step, easy recipes provided by the food experts at myRecipes.com. Applesauce Muffins, Chocolate Chip Waffles, Fruit Smoothies, Sweet Potato Fries, Fish and Chips, Sloppy Joe Sliders, and Creamy Berry Fruit Pops are just some of the recipes you’ll find inside! Kids will practice measuring ingredients, reading nutritional labels and learn the basics of cooking. In addition to recipes, other topics featured in Kids in the Kitchen Cookbook include:

Kids love to help in the kitchen and it is good for them to learn their way around the kitchen so that they will be confident in their skill as as they grow up. My boys both love to cook and bake and now that they are teens they each have 1 night a week that they are in charge of planning and cooking the meal for. I know when they eventually move out on their own they will know how to prepare lots of familiar recipes and won’t be afraid to try new ones. We have spent countless hours training them in how to read recipes, measure liquids and solids as well as how to use common kitchen gadgets and various cooking techniques.

The hard part about cooking with kids is having kid-friendly tools that make cooking fun and not overly difficult. POURfect Kitchen tools smartly designed features allow for easy grip as children with small hands can use their palm and thumb to grasp the bowl. Made in the USA, POURfect products are designed for bakers and chefs of all ages to make food preparation easier, more accurate, and tidier for everyone.
