I live in a house with 3 car guys and the obsession runs deepest in my 15yr old son. As a toddler he started naming car models as we drove down the road and by the time he was 6 it became annoying on the interstate as he named every car we saw. By the time he entered his tween years he would be telling you what type of engine, exhaust etc the sportier cars and trucks had. If he could only recall the facts he learns during school the same way—he’d be a genius!

My number one car guy is also a reluctant reader…unless the book is about vehicles or dogs so when the people at MotorBooks.com asked us to review two of the books from their FIRST GEAR Series, we jumped at the chance. These books are written specifically for reluctant readers. There are tons of beautiful pictures of cars with well written details about them. There are also “Did you know?” bubbles with interesting facts and trivia about each specific car.

In fact, FIRST GEAR book Exotic Cars was featured in and endorsed by Boys Life Magazine, the official magazine of the Boy Scouts of America.

Currently there are 10 books in the series Ford Mustang, Ferrari, Harley Davidson Motorcycles, Exotic Cars, Camaro, Convertibles, Hot Rods, Mercedes-Benz, Muscle Cars and NASCAR Racers. We chose to review Ford Mustang and Exotic Cars. My son devoured the books! He said, “They have lots of great pictures and are full of good information. Even I learned new things reading these books.” As a mom I was happy to find books he likes to read!
