What is being Noseblind?

Being Noseblind is The gradual acclimation to the smells of one’s home, car, or belongings, in which the affected does not notice them (even though their guests do).

We all get acclimated to the odors around us. Have you even walked into someone’s house and instantly noticed the smell of cat litter? I have. The owner often doesn’t notice the smell because their olfactory has categorized the litter smell as “normal” and it doesn’t bother them the way it does someone for whom that smell is not normal.

Our Noseblind Test

We invited our friends Bob and Kim over for dinner and a movie. I made Creamy Italian Chicken (recipe will be on the blog tomorrow), Parmesan Noodles and Garlic Bread. The first smells everyone noticed were of the food either the garlic or Italian dressing scent. After dinner we chatted a bit and then I made some microwave popcorn as we settled in to watch The Perfect Summer (movie review was posted on the blog this morning). The popcorn smell overtook the dinner smells as we sat in the living room watching the movie.

By the end of the movie you could still smell the popcorn, though some of the scent had faded away. Next I plugged in the Febreze Noticeables in the kitchen, lit the Febreze Candle in the living room and sprayed Febreze Fabric Refresher on the couch. Instantly the predominant scent was the Meadows and Rain in the living room and the Hawaiian Aloha in the kitchen.

Febreze has been my go-to brand for air freshening products for years because they clean the air and don’t just mask the odors with stronger scents. The Noseblind test showed us all how quickly we become accustomed to the scents around us and that we need to make a conscious effort to clean the air in our homes regularly so that we don’t become Noseblind to the prevalent odors in our homes.
