Way back in 2011 I told you about the Kendrick brother’s fourth movie COURAGEOUS. I actually wrote 7 posts about this film and the important message it has about fatherhood. It’s hard to believe that this movie is 10 years old! This weekend, September 24, 2021, COURAGEOUS LEGACY is being released in theaters!

Ron and I watched COURAGEOUS LEGACY last night. This is a remastered, special-edition release for a new generation. This updated version of the film includes an enhanced look and sound along with impact stories, new scenes, and a new bonus ending you don’t want to miss! Get your tickets NOW!

A lot has happened in the decade sine COURAGEOUS hit theaters, but God’s plan for families and for fathers has not changed. God has called fathers to lead their families well, to disciple them, provide for them, and to protect them. This movies is just as powerful as the original was 10 years ago. I cried, several times-even though I knew what was coming because I’ve seen the original many times.

The statistics on how fatherlessness effects the lives of children are staggering. Honestly, if men would step up and be the father that God intended them to be crimes, drug use, suicide and many other social problems would decrease dramatically. The Kendrick brothers know this well, COURAGEOUS was their first film on the subject and earlier this month they released the documentary SHOW ME THE FATHER, which shares a lot of the staggering statistics surrounding fatherlessness.

In the movie, the men sign a resolution and vow to hold each other accountable for upholding this resolution. The resolution starts with “I … , Do solemnly resolve before God to take full responsibility for myself, my wife, and my children.” It continues on will 11 more “I Will” statements. Just think what this world would be like if more husbands would truly commit to taking full responsibility for their families. So many lives would be changed!

Maybe you are reading this and feeling like you have failed your family; stop that right now! None of us are perfect, we all make mistakes. One of the themes of this movie is that while we may not have started well, we can finish well! Ask God and your family to forgive you for not being the parent that He has called you to be. Then ask God to help you to walk out what He has called you to. Praise God that He is a God of second, third, fourth…etc chances! Last week I shared the trailer to the movie SHOW ME THE FATHER. If you didn’t get to watch it, click the link, watch it and then come back here. This week I had two cool opportunities. First, I was part of a Zoom call with Alex and Stephen Kendrick! I love all of their movies so this was a fun opportunity for me! Later in the week I got to watch the documentary with my husband, in the comfort of our living room.

If you don’t know who the Kendrick Brothers are, they have an amazing story about how God has used them to make powerful, Christian films. Maybe you’ve heard of, or seen FACING THE GIANTS, FIREPROOF, COURAGEOUS, WAR ROOM, and OVERCOMER. Honestly, if you haven’t seen them, you should. They are all powerful, life changing films.

SHOW ME THE FATHER is a different sort of film, it’s a documentary. I’ll be honest, I’m not a person who usually seeks out documentaries to watch. I knew if it was a Kendrick Brothers production, it would be worth it, and I was right. This movie is all about fatherhood and how earthly fatherhood should mirror the love Father God has for His children.

Ladies, this isn’t just a movie for the guys, we all have a father story, because we all have a father. Good or bad, how we view our earthly father is usually how we view God. My father story isn’t perfect, whose is? My dad was a good, hard working guy, he loved our mom, my sister and I and was proud of us. He supported us in everything we did. Of course, he had his vices and they caused some problems for the family. Some troubles we didn’t even find out about until after he passed away almost 6 years ago. I know I had trouble seeing Father God as a perfect, loving father who always gives His children good things and always tells the truth because my earthly dad would talk big and make promises he couldn’t keep. This led to me having some serious trust issues.

This film weaves together the true life stories of a handful of men. This captivating movie takes audiences of all ages on an inspiring and emotional journey. Providing a fresh perspective on the roles of fathers in today’s society, SHOW ME THE FATHER invites you to think differently about how you view your earthly father, and how you personally relate to God. I think families, ages 13+, should see this film together. He’s not here.  Some 24.7 million American children (36.3 percent) live without their biological fathers. Only 60 percent of these children have seen their fathers in the past year.

Side effects. Children living without their biological fathers, on average, are more likely to be poor and to have educational, health, emotional, and psychological problems, to suffer child abuse, and to engage in criminal behavior, than peers living with their married, biological mother and father.

Fatherless homes produce:

• 63 percent of youth suicides (Bureau of the Census)
• 90 percent of all homeless and runaway children (CDC)
• 85 percent of all children with behavioral disorders (CDC)
• 85 percent of all youths in prisons (Fulton Co. Georgia jail populations, TX Dept. of Corrections 1992)

No substitute. As a male parent, a father brings unique contributions to the job of parenting that a mother cannot. There is no substitute for a father’s love, involvement and presence in the life of his children.  As noted sociologist David Popenoe explains, “Fathers are far more than just ‘second adults’ in the home. Involved fathers—especially biological fathers—bring positive benefits to their children that no other person is as likely to bring.” – Why Children Need Father Love and Mother Love and How Fathers Matter for Healthy Child Development, both by Glen P. Five Things You Didn’t Know Fathers Do

1. Fathers Teach Empathy—A 26-year study published by the American Psychological Association found that children with actively involved fathers in their lives are more likely to be sensitive to the needs of others in adulthood compared to those who do not have involved fathers.
2.  Fathers Give Confidence—Fathers are more likely to challenge their children to try difficult things by taking safe and measured risks. Fathers’ more physical and active play style and slower response to help their children through frustrating situations creates greater problem-solving capacity and confidence in both boys and girls.
3. Fathers Increase Vocabulary—Children who spend extended time with their dads during their childhoods are more likely to have larger and more complex vocabularies. A mother, being more attentive to the needs of her children, tends to talk more on the level of the child. Dads’ directions to their children tend to be longer than moms’, providing children with the opportunity to hear more words and then learn how they fit together to convey a thought.
4.  Fathers Protect Against Crime and Violence—Fathers are more likely to keep their sons out of gangs, but more importantly, fathers give boys the things that can make gang life attractive. Boys learn from their dads that they matter, and don’t feel they have to force their way into manhood. Likewise, girls with good fathers are not as likely to fall to the pressure of sexually enterprising young boys, because well-fathered girls are more confident, having already gained the love of a good man.
5. Fathers Promote Better Treatment of Women—A good father demonstrates to both sons and daughters how a good man should treat women. This is shown by a father’s role modeling, as well as his less-than-good behavior. Research from the University of California looked at 90 different cultures to study how men’s participation in child care related to the status of women in these cultures. They found a very close connection, explaining, “Societies with significant paternal involvement in routine child care are more likely than father-absent societies to include women in public decisions and to allow women access to positions of authority.”
