Don’t miss Tyson’s Run, in theaters March 11, 2022, a feel-good story of faith, courage, grit, and unlikely alliances for a teen on the autism spectrum.

About Tyson’s Run

When fifteen-year-old Tyson attends public school for the first time, his life is changed forever. While helping his father clean up after the football team, Tyson befriends champion marathon runner Aklilu. Never letting his autism hold him back, Tyson becomes determined to run his first marathon in hopes of winning his father’s approval.

With the help of an unlikely friend and his parents, Tyson learns that with faith in yourself and the courage to take the first step, anything is possible.
TysonsRun.com

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

Have you ever found yourself trying to get the approval of a parent? If not, you likely know someone who has. That’s where Tyson, a teen with autism, finds himself as he watches his hero father lead the high school football team. Tyson’s Run is not only relatable, but also a beautiful picture of the rewards of dreams, determination, and relationships when we don’t quit.

What I loved about this movie is that two characters showed a lot of growth. Tyson, of course, as he navigates the public high school setting after years of being homeschooled because of his autism. This transition puts him in new and difficult social settings that he has to learn to navigate. He is also now attending the school where his father is the renowned state championship football coach, so there is a lot of underlying stigma that Coach Hollerman is dealing with since his son is “different”.

Both Tyson and his dad grow as individuals and as a family in this movie. Tyson, played by Major Dodson, who is himself on the autism spectrum and credits acting to helping him better reach his potential, gains confidence and friends as he maneuvers through high school. Coach Hollerman, played by Rory Cochrane, opens his heart and learns to see his son as the blessing he truly is.

Tyson’s Run hits theaters this weekend, 3-11-22 and you can get your tickets here.

I do what I can to support faith based films. In an era where Hollywood is spewing out movies glorifying every behavior that God hates, I want you to know there are other options. In May Ron and I traipsed to Tampa for a screening of All Saints. I had read the promo material I was sent and while I didn’t think it would be a blockbuster, the true story interested me.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-53006" src="http://themommaven.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/allsaints-poster.jpg" alt="ALL SAINTS is based on the inspiring true story of salesman-turned-pastor Michael Spurlock (John Corbett), the tiny church he was ordered to shut down, and a group of refugees from Southeast Asia.
About All Saints

ALL SAINTS is based on the inspiring true story of salesman-turned-pastor Michael Spurlock (John Corbett), the tiny church he was ordered to shut down, and a group of refugees from Southeast Asia. Together, they risked everything to plant seeds for a future that might just save them all.

After trading in his corporate sales career to become a pastor, Michael’s first assignment is All Saints, a quaint country church with a dozen members. It comes with a catch: he has to close the church doors for good and sell the prime piece of land on which it sits. While developers eagerly eye the property and the congregation mourns the inevitable, Michael and his family look forward to moving on to an established church where they can put down roots.

But when the church hesitantly begins welcoming Karen (kuh-REN) refugees from Burma—former farmers striving for a fresh start in America—Michael feels called to an improbable new mission. Toiling alongside the Karen people, the congregation attempts to turn their fertile land into a working farm to pay the church’s bills and feed its newest people.

Jeopardizing his family’s future by ignoring his superiors, Michael must choose between completing what he was assigned to do—close the church and sell the property—or listening to a still, small voice challenging the people of All Saints to risk it all and provide much-needed hope to their new community.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts on All Saints

The movie was well acted and the story was genuine. Unfortunately that is where the positives end. I don’t know how long the movie was, we had to shut off our phones and were warned if a phone was spotted we would be removed from the theater-this is typical for a pre-screening. There was and introduction by the marketing guy and then a video introduction by the Spurlock’s the actual people the movie is about. All I know is that both my husband and I grew a bit bored, this story is very flat. There is no story arc, no feeling of anticipation, and honestly-not a lot of faith.

The movie is all about this dying Episcopal church, All Saints, in Smyrna, TN. I don’t know anything about how the Episcopal church works but they sent in a fledgling pastor to close down a church. This fact seemed odd to us to begin with. Then, in the field while he is struggling with what he is to do, he “thinks” God speaks to him. He isn’t sure because God has never spoken to him before. My question is how do you know you are called to be a pastor if God doesn’t speak to you? Hmmm? Even the bishop is skeptical that God spoke to Pastor Spurlock, is there no faith? As the church moves forward with the farm and the rain isn’t coming the people get frustrated and try to solve problems themselves but, according to the film, no one goes to prayer! As Christians, prayer is our first option for help, not our last.

The themes of accepting those different than us into our churches and communities and helping the less fortunate ring loud in this movie, which is great. These are ways of showing God’s love, but what about the Great Commission? A lot of this movie takes place in the church, during worship service times but the gospel is never preached, talked about, or hinted at. When I leave a faith based film I want to be moved in some way towards a closer walk with God. I want to be challenged, convicted, or at least more aware of an injustice in the world around me. All Saints did not accomplish this goal. It wasn’t a bad movie, I have seen a lot worse, it was just lacking.

If you are interested in All Saints, it will be in theaters August 25, 2017. It is rated PG for thematic elements.

A few weeks ago when I reviewed Living Hope, I saw a trailer for the movie Chasing Grace . It looked like it would have a bit more action than some of your typical Christian movies. I was excited when I received an email just one day later asking me to review “Chasing Grace”.

About Chasing Grace

A tragic accident threatens to destroy a pastor’s family and sets into motion a complex betrayal between two brothers, while exposing secrets no one wants to face.

Pastor Jonathan Matheson lives in a world of black and white, yet finds a way to navigate the “grey in-between” to work to his advantage, while facing one of the most tragic moments of his life. Set in small-town America and woven inside a tale of redemption, “Chasing Grace” is a story of how one family takes on the burden of guilt in order to make sense of their loss. While pointing the finger of blame at his brother, Pastor Jonathan also chooses to hide from the truth while trying to escape his own personal demons. “Chasing Grace” is loosely based upon true events and provides a powerful story about the redeeming power of forgiveness.

Mom Maven’s Thoughts

I do my best to support the Christian movie industry. There are so many unsavory movies being made that I feel, as Christians, it is our duty to support the people who are making movies with a Christian worldview. Unfortunately, some movies just aren’t that good, and “Chasing Grace” is one of them. This movie has no rating but it should be PG-13 for violence, drinking, smoking and mature subject matter.

The biggest problem with “Chasing Grace” is there are too many issues to deal with in the Matheson family. At its core “Chasing Grace” is a film about forgiveness but that message is lost in the alcoholism, fighting, lying, family secrets, death, depression, police misconduct, and more. The story line is very convoluted with too much drama happening but nothing really moving the story forward. We were bored and my husband wanted to turn it off halfway through but I told him we couldn’t because it was for a review. “Chasing Grace” had potential but it totally missed the mark by bringing in too many different issues the movie has no focus and the message of forgiveness is lost amidst the chaos. When the forgiveness does come in, it comes too easily with no one being held accountable for their actions. I found it funny that the alcoholics just promised not to drink anymore and then everything was ok again. That is not how recovery works and it is a slap in the face to everyone who has dealt with an addiction to think that making one promise makes everything better.

About the Movie

The latest direct-to-DVD from Provident Films is Ring the Bell. This family friendly film about love, faith, forgiveness…and baseball takes place in the small town of Middletown, a rural, all-American country town full of faith in God and the love of baseball. When fast talking sports agent Rob Decker comes to town to try to sign the town’s high school baseball phenom to a big league contract, he meets several townsfolk who live out their faith daily and aren’t persuaded by multi-million dollar signing bonuses and challenge Rob’s entire reason for living.

Ring The Bell features a host of well-known Christian music artists, such as Mark Hall along with his band Casting Crowns, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Matthew West, all who play a role in this inspirational drama. Several former and current Major League Baseball all-stars are also featured in the film: ESPN analysts John Kruk and Rick Sutcliffe (a former Cy Young Award winner), along with Ben Zobrist.

MomMaven’s Review

The story is poignant, albeit predictable, and the singers and sports stars are better actors than the bulk of the cast. That being said, this isn’t a big budget film and it is worthy of family movie night viewing. The message of God’s redemptive love and of being a good steward of the life God gave you come through loud and clear and are well woven throughout the movie. I LOVE Steven Curtis Chapman’s character, Pastor Steve-he reminds me a lot of my own pastor.
