I have been a glasses wearer since the summer before 7th grade but I have been interested in eye care since long before I started wearing glasses, I even did my 6th grade science project on the eye, complete with salt dough models! As an adult I spent several years working in ophthalmologist offices as an ophthalmic technician. Eye health is something I care a lot about.

As a former school teacher, I have seen first hand how kids struggle when they can’t see properly. Studies show that 80% of what we learn comes in through our eyes. Any vision difficulties can hinder how we, and our children learn and grow. Since most vision issues tend to creep up slowly it is important for kids to have complete eye exams starting as young as 6 months of age, at 3 years, before starting kindergarten and then yearly for the rest of their lives. Screenings at school and the pediatrician’s office are not enough to ensure eye health. If your child needs glassesit is imperative to receive comprehensive eye care so that adjustments can be made as their vision changes.

We no longer have health or vision insurance for us or our kids. I have been looking into VSP, the only national not-for-profit in vision care. VSP reinvests in the things its nearly 60 million members value most – the best care at the lowest out-of-pocket costs. With a network of 30,000 doctors and highest credentialing requirements, VSP members have the freedom to choose the provider, location, and eye wear that’s right for them. It’s easy to see why VSP is consumers’ #1 choice in vision care.

I know how important proper vision care is for my kids but it is also important for adults, even those who don’t require corrective lenses. Comprehensive eye exams not only check for vision correction but for other eye and systemic diseases including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and many more.

My interest in eye care goes waaaayy back to early childhood. My dad was in the Lion’s Club and their philanthropy was sight conservation. My mom volunteered to run the amblyopia clinics for preschoolers in our area in conjunction with the Lion’s club and the health department. My 6th grade science project was about eye health. I started wearing glasses just in time for 7th grade and when I was in college I joined Delta Gamma, whose philanthropy is sight conservation and aid to the blind. I even spent almost 10 years working in ophthalmologist offices working my way up to Ophthalmic Technician. So as you can see eye care has been an important area of my life for over 40 years!

One company that has been prevalent throughout that time is Zeiss. In the ophthalmologist’s offices we always used Zeiss optics. Zeiss has added some great, easy to understand, educational tools to their website. These tools explain everything from when you and your children should have eye exams, to the differences between optometrists and ophthalmologists and what an optician does. There is a great section on questions to ask your eye doctor at your next exam and lots of information on age related vision changes.

I am overdue for new glasses and since I now wear progressive lenses this is a very expensive proposition. While I was checking out the Zeiss educational tools, I learned a lot about the Zeiss Individual® which is the first progressive lens to integrate how your frames, face and prescription work together for a one-of-a-kind lens that is precisely personalized for the wearer. ZEISS technology is used to create these customized progressive lenses, which are clinically proven to be preferred by consumers over conventional progressive lenses to improve their vision and quality of eyesight. My current eye care provider doesn’t offer this technology so I will be visiting a Zeiss Individual certified provider on my next visit.

Take some time and check out the educational tools so that you can be a more informed patient and consumer.
