I can’t believe March starts this weekend! Spring has sprung here in Florida and that means prom season is right around the corner. April-May is when most of the big events happen for high school juniors and seniors. That means now is the time to start shopping for prom dresses. The longer you and your daughter wait chances are, the more money you are going to spend. Prom dress shopping can be stressful and drama-filled so I thought I’d share a few tips on how to make the process a bit easier.

Tips for Drama Free Prom Dress Shopping

Decide who is paying for the dress. Is this mom & dad’s responsibility? Is your daughter paying for it? Are you splitting the cost? You need to do what is best for your family but honestly, if you expect your daughter to pay for her own dress, or if you are going to split the cost I hope you have alerted her to that fact before now so that she can properly save her money for the big purchase.

Set a budget. This is a prom dress not a wedding dress so set a reasonable budget. There are lots of great dresses available for under $200. Like this beautiful A-line Princess Scoop Neck Floor Length Chiffon Dress from http://www.jenjenhouse.com/Prom-Dresses-c18/ that is available in 19 different colors and in sizes 2-26 for $164.99. If you want a designer label dress or shoes for your prom, there are pre-loved luxury items from consignment shops like CSD.

Discuss what is acceptable BEFORE starting to shop. That means discussing necklines, slits, dress length, back everything. Dresses come in lots of shapes and if you have specific modesty requirements make sure they are discussed before your daughter gets her heart set on a dress that is too revealing. Recently, our local high schools have also set prom dress standards so you may want to check with the school to make sure all of the established rules are followed.

Don’t buy the first dress you see. Shop around. Its best of you and your daughter can peruse sites like JenJenHouse.com together but if that doesn’t work for the two of you you could creates a group prom dress board on Pinterest that the two of you could pin to or even just email each other links to your favorite dresses. You may return to dress #1, but make sure you have looked around and checked out La Femme homecoming dress collection before purchasing.

Check shipping times before ordering. If you are ordering a dress online check both tailoring and shipping times. The beautiful daffodil dress pictured above has an 11-13 day tailoring time since it is a custom dress and a 5-6 day shipping time. You must allow a minimum of 19 days for this dress to arrive. Just to be safe I would make sure to order at least 3-4 weeks in advance.

Buy the dream dress you and your daughter decide on.
