Old as in, I bought this desk when I bought my first computer, an Apple IIGS in 1986! It used to have a tall hutch on the top and cubbies on the right side. Now, all these years later it is just a desk. I have a new desk that I am dreaming of but until I can save up my money, this desk will just have to do. I like big desks for a few reasons, the first being, I have a large laptop. My laptop takes up a big percentage of the real estate on my desk. Next, my planner, notebook and pens are always on my desk. I use these tools constantly and if I had a small desk, they would be in the way. I also have a desk lamp, my iPad, iPhone and other items that are usually on my desk. Recently I added one more, very functional item to my desk, a USB Power Strip.

Powermat is interesting technology.

Powermat is interesting technology. Let’s start with some information from the company website:

Enjoying the freedom and convenience of charging without plugging and unplugging and the tangle of wires is simple!

Upgrade your favorite gear with a Powermat Receiver or use the Powercube Universal Receiver. The Powercube works with hundreds of devices and is the perfect accessory for your Powermat. Then choose a Mat. With many Mats to choose from, you can select the one that is right for your charging needs.

Charging your favorite devices is now as easy as setting them down!

Before I applied to review their product I familiarized myself with the Powermat website. I was specifically interested in the receiver & mat for my Blackberry but after waiting 2 months to receive the product I was informed that they didn’t have any in stock and were shipping me a “universal” charger and mat instead. I received the Powermat 2x mat and the Dual 1850 Rechargeable Backup Battery.

When the product arrived this house full of technology savvy people weren’t quite sure how to use it…even after reading the directions. After some trial and error I figured it out. In a perfect world you would charge the rechargeable battery by laying it on the Powermat and then you could throw the rechargeable battery in your purse for emergency power when you need it. Unfortunately, the Micro-USB end doesn’t fit my Blackberry so the only thing I can use it to charge is my iPod Touch and I use it to do that every night. I cannot get the rechargable battery to charge my iPod unless the battery is touching the Powermat when I plug it in-thus making it not as portable. Once it is plugged in I can remove the iPod/battery combo and use the iPod while it charges BUT the connection is very unstable and I am always afraid I am going to break the jack in the iPod. As you can see in the photo, I always keep my hand along the back of both devices when I am using them together,

I am sure using the Powermat with the appropriate receiver would work very well, as the charging technology works. I have just had no success with the mobile recharging technology.

Have you tried any Powermat products? What are your thoughts? Please leave me a comment and a link to your review, if you have done one.

Disclaimer: I received the above products for the purpose of this review. No cash exchanged hands and all opinions are 100% mine.
