While you are preparing your kids for camp, no matter what their age, there are some very important things to remember…

1. Sunscreen-make sure campers know how to apply sunscreen, when to apply sunscreen-20 minutes before exposure and when to re-apply sunscreen-every 2 hours. A sunburn makes camp life miserable so make sure your kids know how to be sun safe.
2. Bug Repellent-Mosquito bites are a part of camp life but a prepared camper suffers less than those who don’t wear bug repellent with DEET. Again, make sure your camper knows how to apply the repellent safely.
3. Proper shoes-One way to avoid strains, sprains, cuts and bruises is to wear proper shoes. The summer camps I directed had very specific shoe requirements to keep our campers safe. Camp isn’t about fashion, leave the cute sandals at home and opt for sneakers at camp.
4. Read ALL of the camp paperwork. You don’t want to miss a thing so make sure you read all camp paperwork thoroughly. Is there a dress code? Do you need to get the permission slip notarized? Does your child need a physical? What are the rules about bringing medications? All of these questions and more will be covered in the paperwork you receive from the camp. Don’t be the parent that packs inappropriate shoes or clothing or doesn’t get the form notarized. Your lack of due diligence will detract from your child’s camp experience.

 I was first introduced to FyrFlyz this summer at the Mom Select party at Type-A Parent Conference. Maria Bailey was handing out these fun, light up toys for us to play with. We had so much fun at the party that I was thankful to get one to take home. Jordan has been playing with it ever since.
