I have a sweet friend, Amanda Henson aka @highimpactmom who writes at It’s Me Amanda. I met Amanda online, shortly after I entered the world of social media in 2008. In 2010 I had the privilege of finally meeting her in person at the first Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. Since then, I get to see her 1-2 times a year either at Disney or at Type-A Parent Conference. Amanda is a sweet yet kick-butt 32 year old wife and mom of two amazing daughters. Last week, Amanda was diagnosed with Stage 3 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma-breast cancer, when I read the news on FaceBook, I cried.

Amanda is surrounded by a wonderful family, supportive co-workers and an army of friends. We call ourselves #AmandasArmy and we are here to support Amanda in any way we can. Amanda, like many of us, does not have health insurance-even if she did battling cancer is still a very expensive proposition. #AmandasArmy has set up a few ways we can all help Amanda and her family financially. We have a YouCaring fundraiser set up, the widget will be in my sidebar throughout her battle.

We also have a Cafe Press store where you can purchase #AmandasArmy items to help support her. We’ve also set up a PO Box so that anyone who would like to can send her cards, letters and gifts: Amanda Henson, PO Box 46, Campbellsburg, KY 40011.

Amanda has an amazing positive attitude, as does her army. We know she will beat this. Some of her army put together this video for her, to encourage her before her meeting with her surgeon.

Also, don’t forget to take care of yourself. No matter how old or young you are, do your monthly self-exam. Schedule your mammogram and talk to your doctor. Early detection is key to fighting cancer.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 2012

It is that time of year again, I am raising funds for my 2012 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k. This year I’ll again be walking with my mom, a breast cancer survivor, and my sister and hopefully a few other family members will be joining us as well. The walk takes place on October 20, 2012 at the Sarasota Polo Grounds. It is a beautiful course that is surrounded by lovely houses and horse stables. We had a great time at the 2011 walk and one of the goals for this year is for mom to be able to finish the entire course this year with no oxygen tank malfunctions!

Part of the fun of this walk is that almost everyone, men and women alike wear decorated pink bras to show their support for those who are battling breast cancer. Last year on Labor Day we decorated our bras and it was a hoot!

All fun aside though we are thankfully approaching the 6th anniversary of my mom being cancer free! My mom isn’t the only one I’m walking for. I’m also walking in memory of Jill Harris and in honor of Sharie Schultz, Janet Carter, Gayle Rainville, Rene Syler and Cathy Sasser-who are all survivors.

I don’t mind doing the walking, I’m in the best shape I’ve been in for years but I need your help in raising the money. My goal is to raise $250 before October 20th. This year I am adding an incentive. For every $5 you donate you will get 1 entry into a giveaway for a copy of the book Chicken Soup for the Soul: Think Positive-101 Inspirational Stories about Counting Your Blessings and Having a Positive Attitude. After going to my donation page and making a donation, come back here and leave me a comment with the name you donated with, you don’t have to leave the amount in your comment. Treasure Your Chest

It’s October and as you know this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. My mom and mother-in-law are both breast cancer survivors so this is a cause close to my heart. Being proactive is key to breast health and part of being proactive is doing your monthly breast self exam, I do it and you should too. E! News host Giuliana Rancic and Lindsay Avner, founder of the national breast and ovarian cancer non-profit Bright Pink, think you should too. They put together this “Treasure Your Chest” webcast for women everywhere to learn more. Go refill your coffee cup…or water bottle in my case and sit back and enjoy some girl time while learning about breast health.

Orbit White Goes Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Orbit White Bubblemint Gum is going pink for the cause. Ten percent of the sales generated by the purchase of Bubblemint flavored Orbit White gum during September and October will be donated to support Bright Pink.

Bright Pink is a national non-profit organization that provides education and support to young women who are at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Their very educational, and easy to read book “The Little Bright Book” is just one of the many ways Bright Pink educates women aged 20-45 about these cancers.
