I’m not gonna lie, I am a white bread lover. I was raised on it and I just haven’t found a wheat/whole-grain/whatever bread that I like. I have cut way back on my bread consumption over the years, for my health’s sake, but it is still a favorite. Since I still have custody of my son’s Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer, I had to make some homemade bread to go along with the Crockpot Bacon Cheeseburger Soup I made a few weeks ago. I have held on to this recipe for years, I got it from a little old, former Mennonite woman who I went to church with. She had given me loaves of this bread and it was so delicious, I asked for the recipe. I had never made it until now, because I was too lazy to make it without a good mixer with a dough hook!
- 6 cups flour
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 TBS yeast
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 cups warm water 115°
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 TBS butter
- Grease a large mixing bowl, for dough to rise in.
- Grease two 9x5" loaf pans.
- In a bowl place sugar and water, sprinkle with yeast and let dissolve for about 15 minutes.
- In the large mixing bowl add 3 cups flour, salt, and oil and mix with paddle attachment.
- Add in remaining 3 cups of flour, change to dough hook and mix until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
- Pull the dough out onto a slightly floured surface and knead lightly.
- Place the dough in a well oiled bowl, turning the dough to coat,
- Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and place in a warm, draft-free spot for about an hour, until it doubles in size.
- Remove the cover and punch the dough down.
- Pull the dough out onto a slightly floured surface, knead lightly.
- Divide the dough in half, form each half into loaves by rolling them up and pinching the edges together.
- Place the loaves in the prepared loaf pans. Cover and let rise another 30-45 minutes, until about an inch over the top of the pan.
- Preheat the oven to 350°.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes.
- Pull the loaves out of the oven, melt the butter and brush it on the loaves.
- Allow the loaves to cool for at least 10 minutes in the pans before removing to the cooling racks.

This sounds yummy. The recipe is confusing, though. Do I put the sugar/yeast mix in when I’m mixing the flour? Just don’t want to miss a step! 🙂
