Now that school is back in session, our Wednesday night activities at church have also begun. I am the coordinator for our Wednesday night kids clubs Mpact Girls and Royal Rangers. I also teach the Stars class of 3rd-5th grade girls. Every now and then I like to bring them homemade treats, like the ones from bespoke cakes and treats. For our fall kick-off, I made Birthday Cake Puppy Chow, or Muddy Buddies as some people call it.
This year’s class is the smallest I’ve had in the 5 years I’ve been at this church. I only have 7 girls registered and only 5 made it to the first class. In the past I’ve had 12-18 girls. We graduated 10 to youth group this year and only had 1 move up from Prims. This year we are small but mighty!
My girls got excited when they saw my big green bowl on the counter of our classroom because they knew it meant I brought them a treat. I don’t give out snacks til the end of our class, gotta get our work done first. They were all very happy when I unveiled our Birthday Cake Puppy Chow treat!
Puppy Chow is always a crowd pleaser, and it’s so easy to make. This particular version has only 5 ingredients and took maybe 10 minutes to put together. When my kids were at home they used to love to help me make different puppy chow variations for the holidays.
We had a lot left over, since this recipe feeds 20 and there were only 6 of us in class. I brought the rest to a party at my in-law’s house on Saturday. Everyone loved it and my bowl was emptied!
This Birthday Cake Puppy Chow, or muddy buddies is a sweet variation on a classic treat.
- 3/4 cup Funfetti Cake Mix
- 1/2 cup Confectioner's Sugar
- 9 cups Rice Chex Cereal
- 16 oz Vanilla Candiquik candy melts
- 3 oz sprinkles or nonpareils
In a medium bowl, mix together the cake mix and confectioner's sugar. Set aside.
In a very large bowl with a lid, pour in the Rice Chex cereal.
Melt the Vanilla Candiquik following the directions on the package. When melted, pour the candy over the cereal. Use a wooden spoon to gently fold the candy into the cereal.
Pour on the sprinkles, a little at a time. Gently folding them into the candy and Rice Chex mixture. Continue alternating sprinkles and folding until all of the sprinkles are incorporated.
Pour the cake mix mixture into the very large bowl and continue gently folding.
Place airtight lid on bowl until you are ready to serve.
