As a new pet mom. Mushu will be 7 months old on Sunday and we have had her just over 3 months, I have been trying to capture my new baby in photos, but it isn’t easy! I am an ok photographer; I use my Nikon Coolpix P100 and edit my photos on PicMonkey.com. Aaron, my 19 year old is a much better photographer and he uses his Canon T2i, shoots in raw and edits in Lightroom 4! For this photo shoot he used his Tamron 18-200 f3.5-6.3 lens.

I just read “Beautiful Beasties” by Jamie Pflughoeft and I learned a lot about photographing Mushu and photography in general. I can’t wait til I can really take the time and try all the great tips and tricks in this book because I know I will learn more about my camera and how to get off of the automatic settings and how to take better pictures in general. Jamie offers lots of great tips for how to approach animals that you are asked to photograph, animal behavior, composition, editing and much more. I shared some of her concepts with Aaron and we took Mushu and her favorite toy, Mr Lion, to the backyard to see what we could capture.

My favorite picture out of the photos I took.

I really need to get out of the automatic modes on my camera because I have a tough time shooting in the dappled light under the orange tree in my backyard.

Chapters:

The History of Pet Photography

Equipment

Working with Pets as Models

Pre-Session Checklists

Photography Basics

Lighting

Composition

Pet Photography Challenge

Post-Production

Developing Personal Style

Going Pro

Business Essentials

My favorite picture that Aaron shot and edited.

I LOVE that he made the background black and white! He also did a lot of PLP (Pet Level Photography)

Some of the photos Aaron shot

This book is written with enough technical information that photographers like Aaron will be able to learn and improve their photography but it is also easy enough for non-technical photographers like myself can start from where we are and improve our photography also.

I have a cat. The biggest issue photographing him is that he blends into the background of our home. (He’s an indoor cat)

When we had a dog, it was so hard to photograph him. He was a Siberian Husky, so he was large and liked to jump. It was difficult to him in one frame. This looks like a handy book for people with pets.

I dont have pets. My mom does, 2 dogs, and my son is absolutely in love with them…. an any other dogs and cats and birds and fish, and so on. He has down syndrome and this would be perfect for him. He loves books and he loves animals… what a great combination!

i’m CONSTANTLY taking pictures of Bailey, the dog. He HATES it. The cat is faster than I am so she avoids the humiliation.
