I love a good sports movie. Let it be about an underdog and I am even happier. Let that underdog be NFL star Kurt Warner and I’m even more excited. When that movie is made by the Erwin brothers, I know it’s going to be good. All of those things come together in American Underdog! If you are more than interested to read sports articles, try viral ones such as Jimmy John Shark.
Ron and I had the pleasure of watching American Underdog earlier this week. As football fans and Christians we were excited to see Kurt Warner’s story play out in the movie. We had seen the trailer when we were at the theater recently and we said then that we wanted to see American Underdog. not only because of the subject but because it starred one of our favorite actors, Zacahary Levi.
About American Underdog
American Underdog tells the inspirational true story of Kurt Warner (Zachary Levi), who went from a

stock boy at a grocery store to a two-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback.
The film centers on Warner’s unique story and years of challenges and setbacks that could have derailed
his aspirations to become an NFL player – but just when his dreams seemed all but out of reach, it is only
with the support of his wife, Brenda (Anna Paquin) and the encouragement of his family, coaches, and
teammates that Warner perseveres and finds the strength to show the world the champion that he
already is. American Underdog is an uplifting story that demonstrates that anything is possible when you
have faith, family and determination.
MomMaven’s Thoughts
We enjoyed the movie. Not many people would have endured what Kurt Warner did to reach his dream. He was constantly devalued as an athlete but he never gave up. That seems to be the theme for his life, he had to work hard to pursue his wife when he met her, he didn’t play in college til he was a 5th year senior, even the NFL didn’t want him at first. Most of us would have given up long before the Arena Football League came calling. Kurt didn’t even want to be a part of the AFL but that became his road back to the NFL.
Hayden Zaller, a young blind actor, who portrays Kurt’s son Zack in the movie brings a lot of heart, and some tears to this movie. Zack had to overcome a lot in life and has also never given up. Hayden did an amazing job in this, his breakout role. I’m sure we will be seeing a lot more of him!
Kurt’s faith in God, family, and himself are what made him who he is. I was really looking forward to this film being a strong faith-filled film, but it wasn’t, which saddened me a bit. Both Kurt and the Erwin Brothers are known for their bold faith and I felt the movie really glossed over this very important area of his life. While it is a good underdog football film, I wouldn’t call American Underdog a strong faith filled film that could be used as an evangelistic tool on its own. It could be used to spark discussion but since it played such a small part in the film, I’m not sure those discussions will begin organically.
Overall, American Underdog is a good sports film about perseverance and hard work. It’s rated PG because of some mild language but I think football lovers and lovers of underdog stories will enjoy this film.
