I seldom do book reviews because they are time consuming. I love to read but I  hate reading on a deadline. That being said, I was intrigued enough about 21 Myths (Even Good) Girls Believe about Sex: Pursuing Love with Passion and Purity that I agreed to review it, and I’m glad I did.

In middle school and high school I was known as a “goody-two-shoes”. While I hated being picked on for taking a stand, I felt it was safer being “good”. There was no real reason at the time for my stand, except that I believed I was a “good girl” and we don’t have sex til we are married. Unfortunately, my “good girl” status didn’t last long as it was forcibly taken from me in an event that I would later learn would be called statutory date rape. I’m not going to go into the details here but that event changed my life, my heart and my soul for a very long time.

21 Myths Even Good Girls Believe about Sex-Jennifer Strickland

I was years before I invited Jesus into my heart and allowed Him to start healing my wounds. There are still scabs that Satan likes to pick at and try to re-open, even 35 years later. Over the last 25 years I have taught girls and women about purity and all that it entails. I have also worked with many, many people who have believed the lies and had sex outside of marriage and learned that it isn’t what the media portrays it to be because it isn’t God’s best. In 21 Myths, Jennifer Strickland discusses the myths and then shares the truth from God’s Word in a loving and accepting way. We ALL sin and fall short of the Glory of God and it is from this perspective of grace that Strickland shares His love for us.

While reading Myths 1-13 I really felt that this book needs to be required reading for all females. Then when I read Myth 14, I disagreed with the way the myth is stated, because she doesn’t call sin a sin. If God calls something a sin and abhorrent to Him, we cannot say that people who engage in that sin are not sinful, just as I am sinful when I sin. I do mostly agree with her truth on this myth but I feel she is too politically correct and not so biblically correct on the topic of homosexuality. Thankfully things were back on track for Myths 15-21 so I don’t recommend skipping the book because of 1 somewhat misguided chapter.

My only other criticism of the book is the hard-to-read funky font that is used for the Scripture verse that accompanies each truth. I love a fun font but when it detracts from reading important information it isn’t good. Hopefully many women who don’t know or understand God’s love for them will read this book. I would hate for a funky font that makes it very difficult to read God’s Word to be a stumbling block for them.

This book would be great for a book club or small group read, focusing on 1-2 myths a week. If I were homeschooling girls this would be required curriculum in our high school life studies curriculum. We need to have this dialog with our daughters and our girlfriends. We need to know that what we see on TV and in the movies is not real life, real love or real sex. God designed sex to be a beautiful union between one man and one woman who are married and have pledged to be together forever. Then and only then is sex the satisfying, unifying expression of love that it was designed to be.

I would love to read this for myself, but also because I want to eventually pursue a career in counseling and know wounds of sexual sin/abuse run deep. Thanks for sharing your story and thanks for the opportunity!

Judging by the synopsis this book is all about modesty. Differentiating between lust and love. What it means to love in 2016. Important topics I wish I knew before dating.
