I remember back in 2005, hearing the news story that the movie Captive is based on. I don’t remember how I heard it, but it may have been because our church at the time was heavily involved with “The Purpose Driven Life” book and movement. This made me even more interested to watch this movie and learn more of the story behind “Captive”.

Captive DVD Review and Giveaway

About Captive

Based on a miraculous story about the power of faith, Captive is an “amazing, inspiring” drama about the spiritual collision of two lost souls, Brian Nichols (Golden Globe Nominee David Oyelowo), on the run from police and desperate to make contact with his newborn son, takes recently widowed mother Ashley Smith (Kata Mara) hostage in her own apartment. Fearing for her life and desperately hoping to see her daughter again, she turns to Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life for guidance. Ashley and her captor face a crossroads where they discover hope and light in the midst of despair in the moving film that Dick Rolfe, CEO, Dove Foundation hailed as “powerful.”

Mom Maven’s Thoughts on Captive

My husband and I watched Captive together the other night. This is a top-notch movie with two all-star leading actors in David Oyelowo and Kate Mara. The story is intense, but occasionally the movie felt a bit slow. This movie is definitely rated PG-13 for a reason, and I wouldn’t allow anyone under age 13 to view it due to the violence and drug culture. Captive is based on a real life story, an event that really happened during which the victim shared with her captor excerpts from a book she had been given, The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?. While the book plays a prominent part in the evolution of the characters, it is not a movie about a book-even though it seems a lot of critical reviews feel that way. We were drawn to the story, the action and the message of this movie, and We think you will be too.
