Last week I had the opportunity to learn some great tips about how to have a safe summer at an event sponsored by the Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Tampa. I enjoyed the fact that the event was interactive and their were children and parents there learning and practicing the safety rules. June is National Safety Month and with school out for the summer, this is a good time to reinforce these important safety tips.
About the Shriners Hospitals for Children®
There are 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children® in the US, Canada and Mexico. Each hospital specializes in one of 4 pediatric care areas, orthopedics, burn care, cleft lip and palate or spinal injury. The hospital here in Tampa is an orthopedic hospital. These hospitals care for children newborn through age 18 regardless of their ability to pay for their treatment. The Tampa hospital is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary this October.
Summer is known as “trauma season” among public health and medical professionals in the United States as serious injuries and unintentional deaths increase dramatically among children during these months. By educating families on playground, swimming, boating, lawn mower and fire safety Shriners Hospitals for Children® hopes to help reduce the risks of accidents and prevent injuries this summer.Should an accident occur, Shriners Hospitals for Children® can help.
Follow these Rules to Become a #SafeSummer Superhero
1. Go outside and play! Always wear sunscreen, a hat and shoes.
2. Mowing Matters-Kids should stay a safe distance from the lawn mower at all times, preferably inside the house.
3. Fun on the Water-Check weather conditions, wear a Coast Guard approved, properly fitted life jacket.
4. Make a safe splash! Walk calmly into the water with an adult, obey “no diving” signs, jump in feet first after you have tested the depth and never, ever swim without an adult present.
5. Fire Safety Simplified-Locate the fire extinguisher, gather the wood for the fire, kids stay a safe distance from the fire at all times, adults light the fire.
6. Playground Safety:
- Always swing sitting down
- Slide feet first, one child on the slide at a time
- No pushing or shoving on the playground

You know, I never really thought about the mower being dangerous. Because of their allergies, my kids stay away when the grass is being cut. It’s great to have these reminders.

Great tips and the Shriner’s is such a great organization. I had no idea there were so many Shriner’s locations throughout North America. I had wrongly assumed it was one hospital and one location.

This sounds like such a great hospital – I had never heard of them before. Great tips too, I didn’t realize that summertime was trauma season, but I guess it makes sense. My biggest fear is that secondary drowning, its all so scary!
