I can’t draw, I even had to take remedial art classes in elementary school because I was that bad in art! For someone who is so bad at art…I love visiting the Animation Academy at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I enjoy drawing at the Animation Academy because to me that isn’t drawing, it is following directions and THAT I can do! I’m not saying I’m great but the process makes me feel like I am more talented than I am. Here is Grumpy, the last character I drew at the Animation Academy. I think it is pretty good.
Are you wondering, “What is the Animation Academy?”. It is a part of the experience in the Magic of Disney Animation building at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Just before you exit the meet and greet area to your left you will see a waiting area, usually filled with people. Those people are waiting to enter the next Animation Academy class. Class size is limited, the last 2 times I have been in there we didn’t even get to sit at the desks, we sat on a bench in the back with a lap desk. On a recent visit to the Animation Academy there was only room for 2 more artists, there were 5 in our party, so we let the 2 who had never enjoyed this attraction before give it a try.
In an Animation Academy class, a Disney animator walks you through the steps to draw a famous Disney character. The characters change throughout the day and you never know who you are going to get. At this particular class they were drawing Donald Duck.
This particular instructor was full of knowledge about Donald Duck, his history, family and movie career. It was fun to listen to him share all about Donald.
I think 7yo Matthew did a great job with his Donald Duck, he even added some scenery!
Have you ever attended the Animation Academy while you were visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios? What character would you like to learn to draw? Leave me a comment and let me know.
