My Dog Bites the English Teacher-Review

Over the last 20 years I have used countless methods to teach grammar to students in public and private school as well as homeschool co-ops. “My Dog Bites the English Teacher-Practical Grammar Made Quick and Easy” is one of the best books I have ever seen. Author Marian Anders has taught English literature, grammar, and composition to college freshmen and sophomores for the past 20 years. She developed this practical grammar teaching method to make English Easier to understand and less miserable for her students.

Her approach begins with a new approach to locating verbs by using the time change method, explains the 7 jobs of a comma and takes on the dreaded and often confused homophones. The book is short, only 175 pages, not including the answer key. Each chapter introduces the subject and then includes exercises for the student to complete to demonstrate understanding. I have shared her method with my son who is taking English 1101 at the State College of Florida this semester in hopes to help him excel in this class.

This book is very good for all students grades 8-college, and is one I will be keeping in my homeschool library. This book could be used as a homeschooling text, a reference book or a remedial tool for those needing extra help in the area of grammar. As a former English teacher in Mississippi public schools (40years ago!) I am shocked by how many adults do not know when to properly use “it's” and “its”, and do not know the difference between “there”/”they're”/”their”
